Sampling

How about using a (sampler or DAW etc) software contained in a notebook PC (and an audio interface if you want - there are used good cheap one everywhere), you can hide the notebook anywhere. You can trigger it with some kind of "DIY modified USB PC keyboard turned to be a foot switch" if you'd like to keep the cost down.

I've been using computers live on stage for 15 years without any trouble.
So do many musicians in the world. Computer can be reliable, and it's getting better.
but like I said, it's your music, your choice.
