Sano Tube Amp

It is an alnico speaker, see if you can find some numbers on it (and be careful pushing bass into it).

Ok, there are some numbers and letters on the speaker, but hard to see. I can zoom in and make some of it out. What numbers do you expect me to see ? I may be able to see enough to match a set of #'s you are familiar with.

I don't think posting a pic here will help. Looks like three lines of numbers/letters, but one is faded pretty well, the other two lines are tough to make out.

Here is a link to EIA codes! Let us know what you come up with:

I'm getting a head ache lol. Tough to read, these markings. I even flipped them.

Here is what I see, or think I'm seeing...flipped both ways

VE6611 or VE65II
11593 ^
670986
IS ? ? ? ? or ????SI on the badly faded one.

I didn't look at the Celestion list yet, but on the line that looks like 670986, I'm pretty sure the first 2 are 67.

Again, I'm not familiar with these codes, but if the codes are followed by other #'s, my guess it's Eminence code ? (90 % sure it starts with 67)

67 is Eminence code, but Eminence wasn't formed until 1966, and though it's possible that they made a speaker with an aluminum dustcap, I don't recall ever seeing one. And if that's the year and week code after the 67, how could it be made in the 86th week of 2009?

I'm very confused...

Yea, at this point it's futile. The numbers are so faded. I have high res macro shots to zoom, and still can't nail it. After taking another pic and looking at it, it's possible there is a 934 as the first 3 on one set of #'s, which is Oaktron. Were they around back in the 60's ?

No matter, it's an old speaker w/ some rust and if it was replaced, it was replaced long ago. It still works, and sounds fine.

Got it warming up. One last question before I see how it sounds through the Avatar 8 ohm.

Dave's site says don't underpower the cabs. Something about heat and the woofers. So will the 35 tube watts push a 500W 8 ohm cab ok ?

Edit: I went ahead and hooked up the Avatar cab, but I noticed it didn't disengage the 15, so I shut it down.

Invalid Link Removed lists Oaktron as 918. But even though some of the links on Yahoo lead to those sites that install spyware, I found out that it's possible it could be Oaktron and it's likely they were in business at the time your amp was made...Old Kay amps used to use them as well.

Remember this little detail.

The Aluminum Dustcap with the little black vent dot in the center is a design by MISCO aka Minneapolis Speaker Company. Currently MISCO's EIA number is 114, but that doesn't mean that it always was 114. Numbers expire, get canceled, are reassigned. Even right now the EIA is busy realigning EIA codes, info via their website.

What I noticed via the photos of the AMPS on that website, this amp used the MISCO 15 as far as I can tell. They were very popular in the 60's through mid 70's. While they no longer make a 15" er. They make a whopper 10" for bass apps that I may look into.

There is a search function available on ECAUS website http://www.ecaus.org/engineering/sourcecodes.cfm

This will allow you guys to search ALL MEMBERS CODES, keep this link its really handy.

Ok thanks. Man, I appreciate you guys sharing the info. Seriously.

I was going to screw the back on and noticed the 8's wiring

So, does all of the the 8's wiring run off the 15 ? Drawing the power sent to the 15 ?

Got it. Thanks. This one is as you described, w/the vent.

I think you'll find that the output tubes are 6CA7 not EL34. While these tubes are almost identical Pin 1 is wired differently.

If you try to use the existing speaker for bass, especially in an open back cabinet, it WILL be destroyed in short order.

Paul

In the pics it is running on EL34's so it must have been mod'ed already or the design allowed the use of EL34's?

Yea, they are Sovtek EL34WXT. I'm getting ready to call the shop where it last had work done on it to see if they have a f/s for it. If they do, and the tech isn't tied up, I'll ask about the 6CA7/EL34 question while I'm there.

Tech had already left, and they only had 2 switch deals with the stereo jack. Didn't work. I can't find it on the schematics on the LJM site, but then I can't read 'em anyway.
