Sano Tube Amp

Just a couple more questions.....

Is the control on this chassis a bias control ? I don't think the guy who sold it to me knows any more about the amp than I do. He said it was to control the volume for the 8's.

crateamp019.jpg

Also, since the 8's are gone, does that cause any issues regarding impedance ? Can it hurt the amp ? Would the amp have been modded to just push the 15 ?

I didn't see it while I had the back off, but someone on another forum told me the external speaker out isn't supposed to disengage the internal speaker. He said If I want to run a bass cab, unplug the speaker and plug the cab in. So, is it a phone jack ?

I didn't read many of the posts, but if you put that on ebay under Guitar Amps with "tube" in the title you'll make a few hundred dollars.

Yea, I think I'll keep it though. At least long enough to see how it sounds driving a bass cab. I keep getting conflicting info though.

I've had some suggest an 8 ohm cab, a 4 ohm cab, and one guy told me to not to even use it at all until I determine what load the amp wants to see. He thinks the missing 8's are a concern.

Well it will change the impedance, so it's a legit concern. Shame there's not more info available on it. You'd think Stanley Michaels would have some sort of records on it that made their way onto the net by now.

I may be holding the preamp schematic in my hand right now. It's for the 50wRT and 30wRT model. I'll know when I take another look. It's showing 5 tubes on the pre amp chassis, but the way the chassis is positioned, I'll have to take another look, or hold the camera under it and shoot a photo.

The schematics are now missing from the LJM site, but I got them before they were removed.

Ok thanks. Man, I appreciate you guys sharing the info. Seriously.

I was going to screw the back on and noticed the 8's wiring

So, does all of the the 8's wiring run off the 15 ? Drawing the power sent to the 15 ?

Looks to me like that Capacitor is in the speaker circuit. Is it? That maybe have been a cheasy crossover directing some of the highs to the 8"ers.

Yes the power would dump to the 15" which is full range, and the 8"'s just gave it a brighter sound.

LF you should find some GOOD 8" speakers to replace the missing units.... I do bet they were also MISCO's, I wonder if they have any records at the company in Minneapolis on the things.... They may still make the speaker????

Would be cool to restore the thing to its rightful majesty. Might sound OK with Guitar, banjo, THEREMIN, and maybe even your accordion.

Great idea, I'll contact them a and see if the have records or info. I agree, it should be restored.

I'm certain I have the right schematic now. I took some more pics
on the tube side of the pre chassis and it's matching the schematic.
Same # of, and type of tubes.

I'm still trying to figure out what this control is

crateamp042.jpg

Dude, all I can say is I'm very glad that amp made it to the hands of someone who cares so much about it. I expect it to be a real badass when you get it fixed up. I wish more people cared about their vintage amps the way you do...a lot of people would unknowingly just toss it thinking it would be too tough or expensive to fix up.

What is that KNOB FOR???

That my boy is the "MAIN KNOB" don't ever turn that...

Secret knob: probably added by somebody along the way for some ominous purpose. You are going to want somebody IN THE KNOW to crack her open and actually figure it out. Might be something really important wired in there like a bias or hum balance.... Since it isn't MARKED or STAMPED somebody along the way added it.

But now since you already cranked it all over the place, you are really going to need to figure it out.

TUBES GLOWING BRIGHT RED?

lol, point taken. I actually haven't turned it when the amp is on. It's where it was when I bought it, rolled all the way clockwise.

Tubes are glowing orange. The last time I turned it on I noticed a flash (bright orange to dim) under one of the power tubes, so I'm just going to take it to the shop and have it checked out. It hums a little too.

And also ask the tech :
-what 8 " speakers I need to look for. Specs, etc.
-what the mystery control does
- has it been modded in any way

I also want to find out if I can unplug the internal speaker and use a RCA/mono phone jack speaker cable to run an extension cab. Both guitar and bass cabs. I don't expect the Holy Grail to appear, but it will satisfy my curiosity. And of course I want to hear it with the 3 internals and an guitar extension cab.

Unless the tech tells me bad news, I don't mind restoring it. We'll see ;)

Well, the thing looks so cool. The logo, the grill, the corner hardware. It sounds ok now even without the 8's, so there can't be much wrong with it. I'll let you know what the tech says I need to do to restore it.

::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

Thanks for everyone's time and info. Since it's not a bass amp, I'll refrain from bumping the thread.

But again, Thanks to all. I've learned quite a bit about tube amps the last week. And I learned a little about schematic symbols and stuff.

If anyone wants an update after a tech looks at it and I get the 8's back in it, just pm me and I'll let you know. :bassist:

How dare you refrain from bumping this thread! Let us know what happens and don't worry that it's a guitar amp. Before the B-15, there really wasn't much difference.

Yeah Bro come back and POST!!!!!!!

Ok, the amp is still with a tech, but he should be done with it soon. Seems the last person did some sloppy wiring work and so forth. That and the reverb tank, which isn't the original, are probably causing most of the hum and noise issues he thinks.

Anyhow, he has determined it's self biasing which is good news to me, because all I need to do when replacing the el34's is swap them for a matched set.

The control knob on the power amp chassis is the hum control. He has it quieted down. Also, the CU10 on the preamp side was bad and he happened to have a few of those.

The power amp components are healthy. All that's left is to get the tremolo and reverb working on the guitar and instrument channels and also, he's rigging some sort of mod so that I can run an extension cab without the internal speaker, or run both.

He'll let me know what impedance extension cab to use, and he's also going to determine how the 8's were wired and what impedance they were.

Originally, he thought the guitar and instrument channels didn't utilize the reverb and tremolo, but after looking at the schematic again, and the preamp chassis itself, he thinks they may.

Anyhow, hopefully I'll have it back this week.

Sorry to bring this thread back from the dead but it appears there's some knowledgeable folks here that may help me out. First an introduction, my name is Lon and I'm a lowly 6 string player, and I recently picked up a nice Sano 30WR combo amp. While searching the net I found this thread so.......I'm looking for a bit of ID help. The handwritten tag inside says it's a 30WR and the serial number is 30311. It has the original Sano 15" speaker and two UTAH 8" speakers. I don't believe they're original as they are blue and newer looking. The plug has been updated to a 3 pronger. Other than that it looks stock to me, but of course I could be wrong. Here are a couple of teaser pics and a link to many more. Any idea how I can date it? I'm pretty good at internet searches but have come up empty on this one. Everything works 100%. I don't have the stereophonic cable to check that plug (although the phono jack works) and I don't have a footswitch to check that either. Any help with any info is greatly appreciated. BTW as you can see my larger unit also has that mystery pot alluded to earlier in this thread, although the knog is missing from mine. It does turn though. Thanks,

Lon
