Next time an engineer says that, play him this:Always play with the VT BassDeluxe.Wish it had a blend knob as with the DI pedal. Was just so disappointed when the studio man didn't want to use it, he said it was noisy.

The Avalon was probably better because it's studio grade and more expensive in conjunction with an SWR combo(preamp only)but it wasn't my sound and didn't like it.

At that point, I would ask him who's paying for the session. Also, with the VT being noisy, I'd ask if he ever heard of a little device called a "noise gate."
Wish I could afford the reddi and slap him with it.
I've thought of saying that but that would have made me sound like a d$&k. But, I really wished I did. He probably didn't have a noise gate or just wanted "his" gear to be used.

most of the time i play in my band all the guitarist in the audience line up in front of our guitarist(he is amazing). the cute girls are trying to get me to move out of the way to see our drummer who is a male model and bass players line up in front of me. i can attribute half of the bass players that like me for my tone. i love a good deep tight growl filling the room. i just wish some of those girls wanted to see me instead of pretty boy drummer.....lol
my bass clean through my amp is heaven to me. problem is i like to change my sound through pedals. but to the expense of my tone many times. i don't need to further re-shape my sound as my amp three eq sections, a FOH out and compression. never had the need or want to use a pre-amp. tried them, but never liked it. many times i have just dragged my amp to the studio and recorded out that.
what the OP is experiencing is very personal as is most of our bass tonal wants and desires. when he described tonesucking he probably meant tone changing. i like the fact that a lot of us have different sounds and wants. even that some want to copy a great tone. but no one is wrong or bad in their opinion. except for that guy who is trying to make his bass sound like a guitar....just get a guitar....lol

Oh please! Now he's telling you how to play? Yes, there are people who don't like finger or string noise, but it's unrealistic to get it all, most of it disappears in the mix, and quite often it sounds awesome.
Add the drums and it's a non-issue. Actually, it's part of the character of the instrument and of your playing - try to play differently than how you normally play and chances are you instead get in trouble with timing, groove, feeling, whatever you want to call it. I know it kills my groove completely when I start overthinking things like this when recording.
Yes, he did. He said noise would be a problem during compression. He wanted me to feather touch the strings. Very sure wasn't digging in. Told me studio is different from live performance. Sounded as a lesson to me but quite a li'l too much made me appear as a studio first timer.

There is a difference between a producer and an engineer. I don't mind taking advice from engineers, as a good idea is a good idea no matter where it comes from. And frankly, even though I'll occasionally play hard, I usually don't play very hard, either, and I like it that way. But if I'm paying for studio time, I make the final decisions, not the engineer.

Actually, that's a lot of work to keep a studio running, and you do have to have a degree of tech knowledge to pull it off. But it's much easier than it used to be with tape recorders.

If you want a real-tube SansAmp, go looking in the "private stock" section of Tech 21 website. They have it.
The Tech 21 Bass Driver DI is mid scooped, right, the new version 2 is a bit better since it has an added mid control that makes you dial back in a bit of those scooped mids, or at least let you control you mids to some extend.
I don't like it, but I know some who even love it.
I have no experience with the VT Bass, but to my knowledge it is not a mid scooped pedal.
Personally I use a combination of a Joyo California Sound, which is a clone of Tech 21 California, and a Joyo American Sound, which is a clone of the Tech 21 Blonde, running them in two parallel loops with my Boss LS-2 mixing the tone of them.
Both great pedals, and I am quite satisfied with the tone I get from that, plenty of mids, and even if the California Sound is a bit dark sounding to my taste I get enough highs back into my tone with the American Sound.
Tech 21 makes some really great preamp pedals, the Bass Driver is not one of those though in my opinion.
Doesn't quite work that way as the Bass and Treble control has a fixed center frequency and a fixed Q value making the bass and treble do a big dip at the center frequency and then gradually leveling out on each side if you do as you describe.
Also this procedure gives less overall actual room for shaping your tone to your needs and liking.
If I buy a preamp I expect that it will help me shape my tone to some degree.
If I bought a preamp it was probably because I wasn't totally happy with my direct tone, having to blend that direct tone back into the signal kind of defeats the purpose in my opinion.
Also sure there should be a rule about only being allowed to write something everyone agrees on, and if someone has the misfortune of misjudging that he should be permanently banned from the forum.

If this was with an original band it is unacceptable behavior from his side to tell you how you want your bass to sound.
If you were a hired gun I guess his job is to get the recording to sound the way his customers want it to be, though it does kind of sound to me like it was more a case of he just wanting to make his job as easy as possible and make sure you didn't go out of his comfort zone so he could pull off a standard procedure job instead of doing what was best for the recording, at the expense of your performance and tone.
If this is the case next time hire someone who care about their job, or if you for some reason is stuck with him tell him to do his actual job and stop bugging you with his inadequaties as sound engineer.

It's possible to make the curve flatter with a SABDDI too; just back down on the bass and treble knobs and compensate with a bit more level. The default sound is scooped, but using the knobs is allowed.
