It is true with most equipment, it has alot to do with the combination of gear you are using. This is especially true of the SANSAMP stuff. I think you will get better results overall using it as a dedicated preamp than as a pedal. But it works great as a pedal with certain combinations of gear.

One Bass may sound better using it as well. I guess it is one way to make us all just slightly unique.

I just tried the sansamp in the studio (direct) and I gotta say it sounds a lot better than through an amp, I think I'd use it for direct recording, but for now that's not what I'm looking for.

I would say you've already figured out half your problem -Direct sounds a lot better than through your amp. Now figure out why your "amp" is cutting mids.

To me, a "warm" bass tone has big bottom and less prominent mids. The SansAmp does a great job of warming up a solid state amp. The mid cut is part of the warmth. I run mine with all the knobs at 12 o'clock and I love the sound, mid cut and all.

For distortion, I always reccomend buying a barge concepts VFB-2 blend loop (or something similar), then you can use guitar distortions like RATs and Tube Screamers to gank up your mids while keeping the lows and highs clean. I've tried the fulltone and didn't care for it.

I use the barge with either a rat or the fulltone. It really works incredibly well.

timely thread as i have been thinking the same thing after using the sansamp for the last year. the mid scoop has recently sent me back to my countryman85 di for the last few weeks.

how can you maintain the clarity of inserting into the effects loop return jack when putting the sansamp in front of the head (into the main input)? i notice a significant decrease of clarity in front of my amp compared to in the return. boosting treble or presence changes the sound too much, as does cutting back on the blend. i notice it moreso on higher gain settings, like the kings x settings for example.

I ended up trading my sans amp away recently as I really would never use it. I live for the growly mids of my Stingrays and my fretless jazz and no matter how I set up the bass driver, it would suck the life out of my growly mids. In the end it was a compromise I wasn't willing to make for a "tube like" tone.

great unit for what it is, just wasn't the tone I wanted.

I've been using my programmable sansamp for over a year now just going into a power amp and driving a 4x10 cab. I'm using a 2002 Stingray or a '74 Jazz...both sound great with this configuration.

Of course to each his own - but as someone mentioned, the sansamp seems to work best live as its own pre amp or into a loop.
It seems going straight into a power amp gives me an accurate sense of what the sansamp can do.

It sounds best when used as a pre, and you bypass the tone controlls of your amp by doing something like plugging it in to the FX loop return. Sounds even better direct to a PA, and makes gigging with a cramped stage -very- nice. If all I wanted was pedaldirt, and I wanted to go the tech21 route, i'd look at the bass XXL (purple). drive at about 1/4, warp to far left and level set low (that thing gets loud), tone far left works great, imho. Nice and touch responsive.
