Satriani "G5"

Okay, so officially it was the Copper Mountain Guitar Town Festival. Copper Mountain is a ski resort here in Colorado, and this weekend they put on a two day, free concert with some awesome guitarists. My wife and I made a long weekend of it. Sunday featured Mark Selby, Joe Bonamassa, Sonny Landreth, John Jorgenson and Joe Satriani. Each played about an hour, Satch a little longer, then they did a jam at the end with all 5 of them out there.

The first 4 guys by themselves made a fantastic show. I didn't know much about Selby or Jorgenson, but they both have some amazing chops, and both are great writers. Everyone knows Sonny, don't they? Well, he was slidin' up a storm and the crowd just loved him. Bonamassa did what he does best, he just jammed away and his bass player, Mark Epstein, added exactly what was needed. whether that was the root by itself or a flurry of 16th notes all over the place.

Then came Satch. I've never seen him live, although I have every CD he's ever made. I knew he would be good, but this was beyond anything I've ever seen. It's hard to describe, but I've never heard anyone play so well. When he played Always With Me, Always With You, I was one giant goose bump.

Dave LaRue was his bassist for this tour. He looks sort of like Stu Hamm with long hair, so at first I thought that's who it was. Then he was playing a Bongo instead of an Urge bass and I finally figured out who it was. Anyway, he plays just as well as Stu in my opinion, and he seemed to really mesh well with Joe.

After the show the guy behind me said that we had a G5 concert instead of a G3, and that was more or less true. I know it's a concert I'll never forget. For the jam at the end, they did Red House and Goin' Down. There really should have been video cameras there, because it would have made a great DVD.

Anyway, I got some pretty good pictures if you want to take a look:
