Saving up for new head...

What should I get?

I'm thinking about a hybrid, either the mesa walkabout or mpulse 600, or a full tube traynor yba200. I am currently playing in a pop-punk/happy hardcore band(think Hit the Lights) so it needs to cut through the over-distorted guitars and heavy drummer and hold down the low end. but i also love old-school punk, so i need something that can get dirty when cranked to 11. Most of our gigs have some sort of PA so it would be great to have an amp with a DI out for that. I'm in an area where trying out bass gear is next to impossible, so i'm pretty much going with what i read here and harmonycentral. right now i'm just saving $$ so i don't really have a set budget, but i was thinking between $500-800 for a used head. thanks in advance for all the knowlege that's here in the forums guys!!

A used Ampeg SVT-3 Pro will run you around $400-$500 and would hit most of the bases you need it to. Heck, a TB'er (I forget his name) scored a brand new demo unit from GC for $150. Be sure to run it at 4 ohms with as many speakers as you can get. The Avatar B212N (1 @ 4 ohms or 2 @ 8/each) is a good bet.

It's got a DI, is a hybrid design with 5 tubes in the pre-amp, and if you only use the graphic EQ for its 10db boost and don't tweak anything else, it gets nice and gritty. I use it for my punk band and it fits well between 2 100w all-tube half-stacks.

well i'm planning on saving up right now, my band went on hiatus for a while and now we are trying to re-tool everything in hopes of being halp-way decent. i'm trying to talk everyone into just practicing for the next 3 or 4 months and hopefully by then i'll be able to save up enough for some new gear. so the stuff in the classifieds pry wont be there 3 months from now...

The Mesa Pulse 600 is a good head which I regularly use, it sounds great. The only thing I dont like about it is that when put to the test, it cuts out, and stays out until it cools. Usually about 30 seconds, then you have to turn it down a notch to keep going. Its a nice sounding amp, but I see to max it out quite often.

I would rather buy used to save some money, i'm cheap and i have a baby on the way... i looked up the price on that head and it's way out of my budget. any other ideas?

What's the deal with the mp600 crapping out, Whughes? is it only when you dime it and run it for too long, or is just that after a few hours of regular play it needs a nap? the amp i have now only runs 400-ish watts and i don't use all of it, so that's kinda why i was thinking that the walkabout would be nice.

Garr!! Them darn babies are always gettin' in the way of everything! Even after they get all growed up! ;)

Congratulations Man! I hope all goes well on Labour Day!

P.S. I'd wait and see how the reports are on the new Carvin BX500. That's seems to be a lot of amp for the money!

ya me too, we just passed the half-way mark and everything seems to be in order... the bx500 looks interesting, and at only 400 bones, i might actually buy something new...

I would love to a/b one of those with a walkabout, seems pretty comparable on paper.
