Hi everyone,
Just joined and thought I'd introduce myself! I got here through Stew from Nordstrand who has been really helpful in answering my bass building questions (thank you!). I started playing bass roughly a year ago. I've played violin since 10 and (mostly classical) guitar since 17 years old but had to give it all up after a traffic accident more than six years ago already. That made me increasingly unhappy so I thought I'd give bass a try. For a while it wasn't very satisfying as I kept feeling - so ashamed of this right now - it was just a step back from guitar. I'm mostly self-taught in many things, but since I can only study for less than an hour in total each week (if I'm lucky) I thought I'd take some lessons. That was a great decision as I got an inspiring teacher and soon found out how very wrong I was about the bass
Because my gear is a MIJ/Mex mixture defretted Fender jazz bass and because I love making things I'm planning to build my own bass. I'm looking forward to sharing/discussing my design choices here! Currently trying to soak up all available knowledge about designing/building/pickups/etc. so any recommendations are more than welcome.
I live in the Netherlands, got a background in industrial design engineering, was at the conservatory for a while, currently work on a PhD research about gaming in healthcare, like fast things on two wheels (both with and without an engine), love to make things of which music above all... - kind of multifunctional
Hope to learn a lot of new things here!
Cheers!
Frederiek
