SBMM Ray 34 3 band replacement

So a buddy of mine has a one of these that he wants to trade me, But when he was messing around with it the other night, he said it just stopped making sound all together. Replaces the battery, still nothing. Popped open the control cavity, and nothing looks disconnected. He's thinking the preamp is shot. WIth that being said, he thought i would back out on the deal. Im trading him a MIM fender jazz fretless. I dont really have much in the bass, so im still kinda coming out on top even with the preamp not working. Now before i go making any rash decisions, im gonna take it to the local tech and have him see if there is something both if us overlooked and test everything, But im going into this assuming the worst. Initial plan if the preamp is shot is just rewiring it and make it passive until i put a new preamp in it.

I know john east makes preamps, but i dont know what else i could swap into this. Im thinking i wanna go 2 band vs 3 band, but im not sure where to go from here. Help me TB, your my only hope

I had issues with mine too so I took it to my local guitar shop and the guy sprayed it with contact cleaner I believe. Haven't had issues with it since then 2 years ago. Or you could send in your preamp to ernie ball plus $100 and they'll ship you a new one.

I personally am not into investing $200 bones into a bass that sells for $400 used.

I have a Tone Monster 2 band preamp I installed in a Jazz bass. Dead quiet, sounds fantastic. No issues what so ever. $35 bucks or so. A great replacement preamp, if indeed it is shot.

TONE MONSTER SBK-2A Guitar Bass Preamp 2B EQ Balance Volume Treble/Bass +/-12dB

First though, I'd absolutely make sure that the battery leads are connected and that all is good there. Preamps don't generally "go bad" IME.
