Got around fifteen coats of wipe-on poly done. Nearly time for a bit of wet-sanding and polishing.

The last bit of sawdust is trimming the excess neck tenon from the neck pickup cavity. Again, hog it out with a Forstner, then route it clean with a template bit.

And we have a Bass-Shaped Object! Well, unless you’re one of those “have to have the strap button at the twelfth fret or it’s crap” kind of people. If you are, then just head on back to your arguments about flats and tort….

Thanks! I will confess to having a strong preference for Gibson (and Rickenbacker) designs over Fender. I'm sure that makes no sense to a large slice of TB who view the Fender design book as canon, going so far sometimes as to hold them up as the pinnacle of ergonomics.

It's kinda like Gibson = rock and Fender = country, and I'm definitely a rocker....

Plus, on a purely practical note - I have chosen to prioritize designs with a symmetrical lower bout, so that I can install two strap buttons and thereby avoid the need to use a stand. The Flying V is its own stand!!

It’s my Winter 2019 “Mash-up” build - an Electric Upright (Flying) V. Winter 2019 Build Off - the EUV. I don’t actually play it very often, but it’s a hoot when I do!

Gotta respectfully disagree.
Got my first bass in 1972, bought a P because that's what Geezer Butler played and it was heavier than anything else I was hearing at the time.
While I have nothing against Gibson, I just never could get one to sound heavy enough for my taste. Played all the Asian/pointy stuff in the 80's, played a Ric for most of the 90's, and while I liked the sound of the Ric, never really dug the neck.
Got out of playing for about 10 years due to grown-up stuff, when I started playing again I got a deal on a 98 mim P at a pawn shop and it was like reuniting with an old lover.
While I still have a major fondness for the Ibanez destroyers (best Bass I've ever owned, been trying to get my hands on one forever), the P is always the go to for most gigs.

Of course YMMV, And I got no hate for anything except Alembics, just can't get past the broom handles they use for necks, you'd think for the price they would play a lot better. Just an opinion, ain't trying to convert anyone.

I'm thankful that I had little to no visual cues/imprints in my early exposure to music.
At least none that would influence what brand/look/style to associate to what music.

I just read that entire thread. What a cool bass! Makes me want to build an upright.

Do you have any problems with strings rolling off the tuner capstans? They are all tilted towards the nut.

Thanks! The tuners have waisted stems (capstans), which helps keep the strings located. No issues.

One last little update before the end of the Build-Off.

Becky ships the L90s with mounting rings, but they’re black plastic, and both of mine were tall rings. I ordered some cheap chrome rings, but the openings were just a little bit too small for the L90s to fit through, so I went ahead and used Becky’s rings for initial assembly.

Today I fixed that.

It annoys me that I had to file the openings larger, but oh well. It’s done now!

Makes a big difference!
