For those not familiar with the lady, she was married to upright jazz bassist Ray Brown for a number of years. She actually gifted Ray his famous ‘key’ upright. She was a star, he was a jazz sideman. Named the ‘key’ bass because the tuning machines looked like an old style key. That bass is on many album covers but he did not generally take it on the road as too valuable. I saw Ella play with Ray and Oscar Peterson. Ray’s ‘key’ bass ended up in the Toronto symphony after Ray passed.
