Schaller "S" locks.

. . . why pay full-price if you're only going to use half of it?
. . .
I have one of these that has all sort of parts in there, including strap-buttons that aren't being used.

That's a big part of it--extra unnecessary expense, and having to keep unneeded parts around. I already have too many unneeded parts.

Plus, Schaller makes the strap locks that are stock on new Rickenbackers. They know there is a need for just the strap portion of the mechanism by people that already have the button end of things. I have three Rics with straplocks. I want to upgrade the mechanism on my straps. I shouldn't have to buy entire kits of which I will only get use out of half of it.

The strap side half of the Schaller strap lock is probably the easiest guitar part to sell in the entire world.

I’m missing quite a few of them now that I think about it....hmmm.

It’s a great deal for Schaller to be able to sell just the button at half the price of the set though, the strap side piece is the expensive part to make. I bet they couldn’t sell the strap side at half price.

Schaller sells a few sizes of the buttons (where the size is only different on the thread diameter and length). However I'm not sure which size(s) I need for my basses. I recently bought an Ibanez EHB which includes S-locks installed from the factory, but I have 3 other basses I wouldn't mind upgrading.

If nothing else, it makes removing the straps a heck of a lot faster. I've always hated fiddling with buttons and leather. Then again, I've never had a strap fall off? But I'd hate to see it happen.

I'm most concerned with my BTB805MS because, frankly, he's a big boy. Other BTB variants come with S-locks from the factory, so I thought it would be easy enough to swap the buttons out. But I don't want to order the wrong size either.

Google hasn't been helpful. I guess button threads on basses aren't commonly documented?

nope. screw out one strap button on your bass and measure the screw. you don't want the new screw to be thinner, but it's okay if it's a bit thicker. usually the length is not so a concern.

my Warwick Thumb had huge screws (both thick and long) and it's somewhat understandable, as it's a heavy one. so I had to go with big screws (L size).

Did you find the specs?
Buttons L for S-Locks

The button is the part that screws into the wood, and they come in different sizes, but only for the actual screw part, not the button part that the lock latches on to. The page I linked to is for the large size one, but it also lists the dimensions for small and extra large.

there's no more XL size for S-Locks. there was one, but now currently the L size is the largest (it's same diameter as XL was, but shorter). there was an XL size originally, but not anymore: only S, M and L.

yep, I gotta dig out my calipers so I can figure out what sizes I should order. I might update the Ibanez wiki with the thread sizes, just so other folks won't have to do the same removal.

The S-Locks also work with the old style Scaller straplock buttons (without the screw bit). So you can get those buttons and use screws that are available separately in the right size for you.

I put them on 3 different basses. Love them! I have the old style on a couple guitars and one bass. I always threw the screw they came with away and used the screws that came with the bass strap buttons by slightly grounding the edge of the screw head until it fit. Did not have to do this with the New S locks. Like stated before they are easier to remove from my guitars and basses.
