Double Bass Schertler or Accusound setup?

Search this forum a bit. There are quite a few references to the Schertler STAT-B and DYN-B. Very little info on Accusound though that I can recall.

I believe the DYN-B works best through a "PA like" amp and speaker. Not sure if your GK fits that description, but hey it might sound righteous.

You may really just need to try them for youself and see how they work for you and your bass. I tried the DYN-B on loan once, but ended up sending it back. OTOH if it works for Rufus Reid, then maybe I'm the one w/ the problem. FWIW he did (and perhaps still does) blend a DYN-B w/ an AMT. Of course his hands and his bass make a beautiful sound all by themselves.

I've been using the Dyn-B through the Pre-A II ( the schertler acoustic pre-amp) for a while now and am very pleased with the results. The key to making the Dyn-B sound great, is the Pre-A. I have used it through different amps and though they do color the sound a little differently, it's not a big deal. As far as pickups go it's the closest thing to a mic in my opinion.

Alan, are there reasons why it can be advantageous to use the DYN-B instead of a mic? I guess I mean if your are trying to get a sound like a mic, why not just use a mic? Not trying to sound like a jerk or be argumentative. Just curious. I guess one advantage is you can move around and the distance from the transducer to the bass stays constant, since it's "stuck" to the bass.

That green putty worm thing seemed a little problematic for me, but like I said I only had it for a short trial period. And I did not have the Schertler preamp.

Bolo, good question. Yes, it is more constant which is good because I do have to move around alot. Of course, a clip on condenser would stay constant too and I have used them with good results. But, the Schertler offers a little more versatility in that I can play in louder situations without worrying so much about feedback and with the pre on stage with me I can control the tone before it goes to FOH. Ah, the green worm thing! Works great and I can easily move the pickup to a different bass if needed. You're in some beautiful country over there in Woolwine.

I've been using a Dyn-B for a couple years now. Over a year ago I posted a clip of the dyn-b and a shure Beta 57. It's n this thread:

I like the DYN-B and it has great combination of mic-like and reasonably feedback resistant. There are times, though, when I think I'd be better off slapping a full circle on the bass and/or using a mic.

I've often thought that if you added a little bit of reverb or delay to the Dyn-b , you'd add in some of the "air" that's missing. But then I'm already luggin more crap to gigs than I want to lug

There is no perfect amplification solution, dammit!

Alan, thanks for your reply. I can understand the "more volume" thing. I did a gig last night where it was quiet for the first set and the mic worked great. But then the people in the bar just got louder and louder, and the mic was problematic.

You mean you've actually heard of Woolwine? :D I am headin' up to the Friday Night Jamboree in Floyd tonight as a matter of fact. Just to listen. I'm a jazzer, not a bluegrass dude (yet ...). I will try and come talk to you at your Del McCoury gig on Oct. 11. I live 30 minutes from Pittsboro, NC. :)

Hey pal !! Good to see you posting again.

I did think the DYN-B was better at picking up the body resonance than any other p/u I tried. Maybe that's a given based on the unit's design. I found it very hard to dial in w/ my bass, but it was definitely a quality you don't tend to get w/ bridge wing mounted pickups. I guess that's like "air" in the sound. Or "woof" and "vroom" in a bad case.

Alan, thanks very much for your offer. Matter of fact I already PM'ed you. I've got a gig on the Albemarle Sound the same day, so I can't make it to see you w/ Del McCoury in Pittsboro. Maybe next time.

Off topic (in the PM too, but other TBers might enjoy ) - I told my wife I had been exchanging posts w/ the bass player from the Del McCoury band. She went wide-eyed. "Del McCoury?" :eek: "Yup."

Again, "The Del McCoury Band?" :eek: :eek: "Uh huh."

Usually she thinks I'm wasting my time on TB. She calls it "talking to my imaginary friends." But boy she thinks more highly of TB now, and that I'm really somethin' since I been tradin' posts with you.

i owned the accusound system and it sounded very poor, ive also heard many other people have problems, my full circle just wiped the floor with it.
Also i was very unhappy to discover that the mixer unit which is (was when i bought) marketed as an accusound creation. it is in fact made by another company (akg?) for very little, has an accusound sticker placed over old logo and is sold at loads....very poor......

however i have heard that a couple of years back they changed ownership,
