i am thinking of getting tb user earl's dyn-b and preA 1 and have been trying to gather more info on the preamp. i did a search and found a boatload of info on the preA II and III, but saw next to nothing about the 1st incarnation.

any folks out there with experience with these units? the one post i read about it said that the battery cable inside busted.

I used the PreA1 with a StatB for a number of years although I just sold the bass on which this pickup was installed and elected to install a Fishman Full Circle that I took off another bass, rather than take the time to re-fit/re-carve the cork on the StatB, for the replacement bass. The PreA is a simple device that has only a volume control, acts as a power source and has a built in, non-adjustable HiPass filter included that is a big part of the reason why this pickup sounds so good. I think I have posted previously on this topic BTW so there should be some threads floating around out there. I had the StatB installed on a very expensive and incredibly good bass, a Hachez bass, that I sold in November of 2008. Not only was the sound of this bass outstanding, but the amplified sound through the StatB matched it. It is a very accurate device indeed and also worked very well with Acoustic Image amps. It was Rick Jones who recommended it to me in the first place years ago when another pickup I had initially installed on the Hachez wasn't making the grade.

Hey Erik. I think your preamp was the Stat Pre, from the above description. The PreA's have treble, bass and resonance controls, too.

You're right about the StatPre—mine is at least seven years old and it was all they made at the time.

I'm standing outside a George St restaurant (CentoTre) waiting for the rest of the quartet to show to play a Jazz and Dinner event that is part of the Fringe Festival. This is a beautiful city.

on the money about the preA 1, mr. hochberg - it has resonance, volume, low, and brill controls. what the heck is brill?!

i wish schertler had a downloadable manual for this unit, but on their website i saw only the preA II and III. would like to know how the shelving works for the tone controls.

in my first experiments with it, on a gig friday, i found it to sound just so so with the dyn b. though the preA has more tone controls, and the resonance control is helpful, i found the tone of the dyn b through my little fdeck pre more initially satisfying. volume was limited due to feedback, which was disappointing, and the low end was thin. could be that i need to move the pickup a bit, or go back to mixing it with a full circle, which filled out the low end. or just crank the brill. :D

Have a Guinness and a single malt for me, preferably at Jeckl and Hyde, will ya? Nothing like it! (I know it may be kind of touristy but I loved that amazing, long bar with the water taps)
