Scratchy Pots?

Hi there,

Ok I admittedly understand very little about all the all the wires and pots inside my guitars. I am slowly learning how all this works.

So I have an ESP TA 200 that I picked up used. (so far has been an amazing bass that I got for an AMAZING price) It has three dials (Volume/Bal/Tone) Lately when I use the Balance knob I get a lot of static and in fact has cut out completely at low volumes.

It's a passive bass with 2 EMG HZ soapbar humbuckers

So I ask the experts here for some advice. What do you think is the problem and how would you proceed? Also if replacing one or more of the pots is necessary what do you recommend and why?

Thanks

Its a dirty pot. A lot of the time a little bit of tuner cleaner spray like Radio Shack sells will fix the problem permanently. Occassionally it wont and scratchy pot problem will return. In which case replacing the pot is needed. Spray tuner cleaner on shaft with knob off or into the back of the pot inside the control panal. Rotate shaft back and forth a lot. Wipe off excess spray. Wait a minute or two for residue to evaporate. Plug bass or guitar back in and see if scratchy noise is gone.
