Sea Change Bass Tone

My first post! I love your bass tone on Sea Change. It seems like there are so many channels (people, opinions) the sound goes through by the time it is finalized on a record. Do you attribute the bass sound to the producer's choice, the mixer, or you, the player? Thank you so much.

Well, we mixed each song at night after we tracked it, so there wasn't much outside influence. Nigel is a great engineer, and he kept the signal pure. Fet 47 in front of my B15R, no DI . Very simple.

Without sounding vain, I don't think I can avoid saying that at least some of it is in my approach to the instrument too.

Without puffing you or anyone up more than is true, I know what I love about Sea Chance is how everything and everyone was successfully captured as it was, not the least of which being Beck's lyrics and performances. Amazing energy coming off of everything. The production seems more about letting things happen than micromanaging. That record always hit me the same way as some of the greats from years of yore. The perfection is in the imperfections.

"Sea Change" is my favorite record of the last decade; a full-spectrum emotional landscape. The vocal/bass interplay is a huge part of it. And yes, JMJ, whether you're holding back ("End of the Day") or you're going for it ("Paper Tiger") the effect on the whole sonic picture is enormous.
