Years ago i attended the Musician's Institute and studied upright with Putter Smith, a jazz bass player who avidly supported rabbath technique.

One day in a lesson he showed me an intonation exercise that took him literally all over the neck of the bass, from "first" to "sixth" position. It involved the crab techinque and all. It was really quite amazing to watch him play such a technical exercise and it was perfectly in tune.

The problem is, i feel im now at a level to work in this exercise, but i cannot get in touch with him as i live half a country away.

I own the first and third books (red and blue) and i was wondering if this exercise/etude rang a bell to anyone? I would be eternally gratefull if someone would be able to say "Oh! its on page x in book y!".

That is what im hoping for.

Thank you!

Book 3, Pages 52 and 53. Basically its an exercise demonstrating all six positions in the key of C major. What you are describing sounds a lot like this exercise. I do this every day as part of my scales practice. Hope this helps.

I just looked and From what i remember, he wasnt playing something that linear. Would you have any other idea? I dont remember it being quite Scalar or based on Arpeggios, but he was jumping arround all over the place, in and out of positions.

I am going to start doing this exercise regardless, thank you :)
