Cleveland has no problems in this department?
Cleveland took their time finding their principal. If I remember correctly it took years.
Cleveland hired Christopher Hanulik. He took the job for a season, and left for personal reasons. Then Max Dimoff won the job. But of course I could be hazy on details. I am not trying to start a fight I want to be open and just explore.

I realize this topic has been shut down for some time now, but lets be realistic here. There is absolutely NO reason to not hire/trial someone at any orchestral audition (unless very few show up). Orchestras today have their heads up theirs arses about what is right. There are ALWAYS qualified players that should win or at least be given a trial. Seattle is BS in my opinion for at least not having given a trial to Travis or Joe. Both very, very good players. Detroit can suck a big fat one. Hey Detroit bass section, grow some cahones. Stop being so bitter at us younger players for being better than you. I bet half of you play with ZERO inspiration and could learn a lot from us "in-experienced" monsters. I can understand the Concertgebouw not hiring. Their bass section is the worst of the strings (by far, ask the violins). They have no clue what to look for.
In closing, these auditions for bass positions can be very expensive, mind boggling, intense, and too often a waste of time because of stupid arrogant committees. It probably will never change. Tradition can be so lame sometimes.
PS Detroit bass section,
Leave your damn egos at the door before you show up to the next audition. YOU AREN'T GOING TO FIND ANYONE WHO IS OVER 40 THAT WILL WIN. deal with it.

you have to consider they do have to take age into account when choosing someone for a principal spot too. although i disagree with not taking any of the bass players that had a trial, they do need someone with at least some orchestral experience.
