There's nothing magical about 90 feet. If the bases are closer together, then it's a shorter throw to first for the pitcher, meaning that the runner takes less of a lead off. The catcher also has a shorter throw to second which will be more accurate.

Isn't he suggesting numerological/mathematical philosophy?

What IS the space between first/secong, AKA one/two? Who has deviced this spacing (Intelligent Design -> God)? Is it an invention of our own? Are numbers abstract things, of wich the essence lays in our world (Aristotle), another 'abstract world' of essences (Plato) or are number merely 'labels' with no fundamental meaning or direction to reality (Nominalism, William of Ockham)?
