Curious what is pushing you away from Ibanez here. SR406 or SR506 is the answer I would give for your budget. The next two on my list would be Peavey Grind 6 or Peavey Fury 6 (these are much harder to find, but GC used seems to have them in stock).
Rocked an SR506 for a while. Good bass. Upgrade to a used Schecter Stiletto Studio 6 when I found on for sale, $600. It was a dream bass of mine in my teen years, which was the impetus for my decision. Both axes are great mid-tier options.
