Seeking “budget” 6 string

Take a look at the squier 6 string jazz bass… it’s pretty incredible.
Or, if you can find an SX Ursa 2 6, it's way below the OP's budget limit, but an EXCELLENT first foray into the 6 string world.

Just find a decent used one on ebay or reverb with a seller with good ratings...

Curious what is pushing you away from Ibanez here. SR406 or SR506 is the answer I would give for your budget. The next two on my list would be Peavey Grind 6 or Peavey Fury 6 (these are much harder to find, but GC used seems to have them in stock).
Rocked an SR506 for a while. Good bass. Upgrade to a used Schecter Stiletto Studio 6 when I found on for sale, $600. It was a dream bass of mine in my teen years, which was the impetus for my decision. Both axes are great mid-tier options.
