Seeking advice on which Bass to purchase

Third…"RI" is short for "reissue", which is when an older style of instrument is reproduced and "reissued". For example, that '74 RI body has what's called "seventies-era pickup placement" which has the bridge pickup a little closer towards the bridge. It creates a slightly different sound, some say it has more "growl", than the Jazz basses made before and after.
I see,
Appreciate the info yo!
So as for the Japan RI neck, How do the Japan RI necks compare to USA RI necks? (or other MIM / USA for that matter).
Also note the neck mentioned is 2004, I've heard Japan has some good and bad years..
As for the lefty thing I don't really care. it might be cool.. dunno.. Just hope it dosen't come off as a trying too hard to be cool.

Another thing I thought of...
Would the P bass neck really increase the string spacing by that much, or would I have to also change the bridge aswell?

Also, I may be way off with this but I'll ask anyway:
Do different necks affect the output of a guitar?
Meaning - If the Jazz pickups are designed to pickup a certain type of sound and the neck on the guitar is giving em something else, would that sound good? bad?

OhDee, I didn't catch where you're from but if you're in Europe you should check out Maruszczyk basses at public-peace.de. They can deliver a Jazz body with a Precision neck - or in their parlance, an Elwood body with a Jake neck. (BTW, I won't divulge how many times I looked at those basses before I caught the Blues Brothers reference. ) Well within your budget.

I love it! Answers bringing forth more intelligent questions!!

I haven't heard about good or bad years from Japanese-made Fenders. Most of the time, I just hear a lot of praise. My only negative experience with an MIJ neck wasn't because of faulty construction, but rather it's vintage. It was a neck made in the 1980's, so it was built along slightly different specifications. The heel of the neck was too big to fit any recently-made bodies.

In the end, I sold it to a TalkBass member who had an older "Jazz Bass Special", like the kind Duff McKagan played during his Guns n' Roses years, and it fit that body perfectly.

I almost had a similar problem attaching an Aerodyne neck to a Mighty Mite Jazz bass body. The neck heel fit perfectly, but the screw holes didn't exactly match up. However, I was able to get it into position by putting on the strings and gradually increasing their tension to pull the neck in enough to seat the screws in place.

With that in mind, I would be prepared to do a little extra work if you want to go with a Made In Japan neck. Oh, one other thing…

It shouldn't affect the string spacing over the body that much…maybe by a millimeter or two…nothing significant. Certainly not enough to replace the bridge. But aside from the setup you'll need to do when installing a new neck, if you use a lefty neck, you will have to replace the nut.

Also, I may be way off with this but I'll ask anyway:

It's a good question, but it's also a "loaded" one. The "tone-wood debate" over which woods lend themselves to this-or-that sound has, and probably will, rage on for years to come. Some threads, many of which had nothing to do with "tone-woods" in the first place, have turned into awful catfights, drowning out the original point of the thread.

Me? I'm a bit skeptical and haven't seen enough hard science to sway me one way or the other, so I'm just going to say, "I don't know!". One thing I can say, though, is I've had a lot of experience with how "Strings" having a major impact on the sound of an instrument.

For shame, my son. :rollno: For your penance, say three Hi-Dee-Hi-Dee-Ho's and go on one Mission-From-God before bedtime and all shall be forgiven.

I actually overlooked this option because my good friend owned an American Deluxe Jazz (maple) which was pretty horrible sounding and gave her back problems... Of course it's also a dynamic between player and instrument, it being more Jazz-Fusion-Funk oriented and we were playing more alternative and noisy music. It was probably more the maple + pick + misuse of the knobs more than the instrument was bad... anyways...
But after some impressive YouTube demos I think this might actually be a pretty solid option to consider.
I may be fooled by the amps on the demos, but this Bass didn't seem like it had that same weird mids and plastic/sharp tone that I didn't like with my friends Bass...
I think I may also have a prejudice against anything with more than 3 knobs because of 'cool' or 'uncool' BS...
I like to keep things simple, not a jazz guy nor do I slap... But like I said before I do have a great experience with an active 1983 'Special' Presicion.

What do you think of this instrument?
And what are the chances of finding one at a lower price?

Of course I think they are fabulous. For a lower price you'll just have to call your favorite e-tailer and ask for a discount. $1,600 might be possible.

Ooooh. Do you know any recommended stores that might give a discount? in NY? I am a decent talker I can make certain people give me a discount but in my country music stores are sooo greedy. You can pray for 10%... and I'm a music teacher.

And another thing that concerns me... Is this overkill? I more a melody and harmony guy, I have practically NO chops as a bassist... hehe...
Are there any examples of punk/alternative/rock musicians that use this type of instrument? I mean... My favorite bassists all play passive pretty much always, I think... I ask just to maybe feel less odd about liking this model..
I am thinking theres a possibilty that I liked that 83 P Bass not because it was active but possibly because it was just comfy...
I am making all these assumptions because there is practically no variaty in my country to actually test at stores... You go to a store, theres an American Standard with maple... 'Do you have Rosewood?' -'No.. We have a Chinese piece of poopie if you like'... -'Uhh.. thanks' :vomit:

And to all you who gave me advice on building; I might go back to that - appreciate your help... Just wanna check all the options !
Peace

You can always call Sweetwater and talk to my sales engineer, Chris Carter, ext 1300. And Sweetwater is having their GearFest next month! Gearfest | Sweetwater
In New York there is Larry Hartke's famous bass lounge in the Sam Ash Super Store in Manhattan but the taxes there are super high.

Fender's Elite basses are only a year old so give them some time, but they are already catching on pretty quick.

Oh crap I heard something about that... Is that only for purchasing in NY or also shipping to NY from other states?
And is there like a tax return for non US citizens like there are VAT returns in EU?
Those are questions you are going to have to answer for yourself. In my state if I order from an e-tailer that also has a brick & mortar retail store in state then I also have to pay my state's sales tax. When I buy from Sweetwater, I pay no sales tax as they have no stores except in Fort Wayne, IN.

Just order a loaded J body and a P neck when you're here. Take home these "parts" in your suitcase and assemble when you get home or have someone local do it if you don't feel up to it. Use Fender parts from the same product line and you have virtually no chance of them not working together properly. I assembled the bass below from Road Worn series parts to get a J with a wider P neck. The bridges are the same.
