It's a stunning bass but I would have gone for frets to the 12th, then fretless from there...

I completely agree. It looks great but I'd find the fretless section (up to 12th fret) quite restrictive.

This might be old news, but it's new to me, have you seen this one!!! I am not sure what to think although I am leaning towards interesting/I like it.

Looking at the picture it seems the "fattest"string (E or B) is the 3rd in from the left. You sort of have a fretted standard bass (with string order reversed) and a standard fretless bass all in one.
Definitely an interesting bass.

Thanks for the comments. The colour looks great doesn't it! I've no idea how much longer - I think about a month from what Martin was saying last time we spoke.
juna_king, go to the Invalid Link Removed. My bass is in the Tints/Bursts section, but as far as I can tell all the other Sei basses that Sims Custom have finished are in the Clear/Solids section.

Bit late on this, but that is one great looking Sei BigRedX. Your idea of having this colour & style of finishing was a masterstroke!!

BigRedX - One amazing looking bass coming your way real soon...Is the neck Wenge and Bubinga? If so, it is highly likely that an off-cut from that was what convinced me to go for the same basic woods in the SEI 9 neck.
Small non bass related update from me...I managed to dislocate and break my left ankle whilst on a work team building type day out. We went playing laser combat games (think paintballing but using lasers instead) and I tripped over something low and hidden in the bracken
Spent 8 days in hospital getting patched up (operation, plates, bolts, screws etc) and cannot start walking on it until September. Provided me with good opportnity to do some of those things I have not got round to (e.g. paperwork, finances and finally learning some basic music theory 
).

Really sorry to hear about your ankle. I can only imagine how painful it is, I hope they are giving you decent pain relief.
BTW, you know the TalkBass rule 'no photo no broken ankle'

Well you asked for it:Seriously, thanks for the kind comments from yourself & Mark. Slow but positive progress.
Whilst getting the above photo ready, I realised that it was Martin's photos of the SEI 8 I published and not my own
scowl: breaking the rules again...). I've been meaning to try and take some decent photos for some time, but certainly can't now for the next couple of months, so here is a rubbish one I took a while ago:Hurry up Martin and lets see some new SEI basses, rather than resorting to republishing old ones!

Keep mending and remember that plaster casts really itch in hot weather when the leg gets sweaty. So think now what long thin object you will use to scratch before it happens. Spoken from past experience.

BigRedX - Sorry, I have no inside track on your bass as I have not been to The Gallery recently. Martin always has off-cuts when he shapes the neck of every SEI bass. He and I were discussing neck wood combinations and he showed me a Wenge and bubinga off-cut that looked a little like your bass in the Simms picture. Really looking forward to seeing it completed.

There is a Chapman NS stick done the same way, only in opposite. The NS stick has fretless on the lower strings, and fretted on the upper strings. And has the inverted bass strings also.
