Double Bass Seifert Bow

I have an opportunity to purchase an older Seifert bow for $800.

It is a hexagonal stick, pernambuco in pretty decent condition.
A few nicks and scratches but that's all.

Just wondering if it is a good value.

I tried it at my lesson last nite and I really liked it. Weight wise its on the medium side and feel well balanced.

They are medium grade bows. I would suggest having a Symphony professional test the Bow for you as he would be better sutied to judge the quality and playability for all styles of playing. I have bought new Bows that sell for less than that that play and sound better than many older medium grade bows. The old classics will always go up in price but the commercial sticks can often be re-produced at a similar or lower price.

I have a Seifert bow. There are Lothar Seifert bows, and W Seifert bows. I think the ones marked Lother are better quality. I like the bow, but am planning on upgrading pretty soon.

It is a W. Seifert bow.

I found out this afternoon that new W. Seifert bows range from $950 to $1600 list new.

I bought a used W Seifert with a round stick for around $600, so $800 doesn't sound too far off for an octagonal stick. A certain bass mail order catalog though has new ones on sale for $725. Personally, I would go with a carbon fiber bow in that price range.

Have it appraised if you can. If your teach says it's cool, the price is right and you like it then go for it. For $800 you're not mortgaging the farm.

It's my teacher who is selling it. He is also selling a carbon fiber bow for $300.

I'm thinking of buying the carbon fiber bow. It looks like a coda bow, so $300 is a good price since they go for $600 new.

If they're roughly the same as far as how you like them, then do it. If the Seifert really talking to you and the other isn't, then don't be foolish

Glivanos, -800 sounds kind of pricey for W. Seifert bow. If you can get together -300 more, I know Lemur has some bows you could try in that price range. Also, Arcos Brazil makes really good pernambuco bows for around -600. David Forbes, a top bow maker, likes them and sells them for around -600 to -700, depending on the bow. Email me, PM, or respond to this thread and I can give you Mr. Forbes' number.

I agree with you and I did not purchase the bow based on what I also discovered on the Lemur site (great minds think alike!!)

I'm still looking around for a decent French style bow, trying to sell some of my low end bows to finance it with.

No problem, Glivanos. I got your PM about David Forbes. I think you will like those bows. Last time I saw him, he had a french bow made from really pretty figured pernambuco. Perhaps you could try that one.
