Self-Powered Monitor Issue

Greetings everyone. I have an issue, hopefully someone here can help me out. My girlfriend a few years ago bought me a monitor for Christmas. She always heard me complaining about needing one (background vocals) and I was too frugal to go buy one so she surprised me.

I've been using it, but my issue is if I turn the volume up on the monitor it also turns me up in the house, if I turn down it turns house down. The house volume and monitor volume will not separate. If house turns me down, then it turns down the monitor too.

I need to be able to turn this thing up without coming through any louder in the house. The gigs have no subwoofer for bass, so my rig is loud to make up for that.

I’m guessing that you plug your mic into the monitor, then its output jack goes to the house? If so there’s no fixing the problem. I’d suggest getting yourself a dedicated monitor feed from the house mixer, with nothing but your vocal in it, that you could plug into the monitor.

How are you connecting everything?

Sound like you’re not running off an AUX, but feeding through to the mains.

It's set up just like @WayneP said. The mixer the band uses has like one monitor mix, and they're giving that to the keyboardist cause he has no amp. He's just plugged in direct. I don't expect that situation to change anytime soon, so I might be stuck.

Interesting. My signal goes to the board first, mixed for FOH and the signal that is sent back to my monitor is exactly what I asked for at the volume I asked for - kick, snare, and vocals.

The only thing I can't touch without screwing everything up is the gain and master on my amp.

You could always get a cheap mixer like this. Mic into the mic channel. Go out of the left channel to your monitor and out of the right channel to FOH. I am pretty sure this would work for you as the monitor and FOH would be getting separate signals. When FOH turns up or down it wouldn't affect the monitor feed.

I think you just solved this for me @BAG . And to think I was ready to go in and try to rewire this thing. A tiny mixer seems perfect. And I can find those used pretty easy too around here.
