Sell surplus bass...... Or don't

Thanks all.

I'm glad I made the post, a few suggestions on board, as 'useful'.

I jammed with the J bass yesterday & today. More time to explore eq, pick up settings & with effects pedals. Definitely some great sounds to be had AND the neck/action felt good. I recently bought an Aguilar TC500 and this definitely lifts the tonal potential and 'bite'. My slap (almost) sounded pretty hot!!

Bit weird that I'd written it off last week. I'd had the flats on it for so long (dull & no sustain), so it was a rediscovery and also a fresh discovery. All in all a pretty usable 2nd bass, distinct from the Sterling, which is useful.

So I'm holding onto it for now. Def will try out various strings - like that idea, hadn't thought of it that way, as an ongoing experiment.
Will re-sand neck.

cheers guys.

ps it wasnt a gift from the Mrs - not sure how that became a thing

Honestly, the amount of time, energy, and money I could have saved over the years by just changing the strings on a bass is ridiculous. If a bass doesn’t inspire you tonally but otherwise feels great and looks nice you should always try a string swap first. It might quickly change your perspective.

Yeah, I don't think I'd like my Jazz bass either if it had flatwounds on. I usually use roundwound DR Pure Blues 40-95's or D'Addario EXL190 40-100's.
If you end up selling your Jazz, you could always get one of the little short scale Sterling Stingrays. Those are fun.

. . . In decades of playing, never had anything fail or get damaged. If I did, I'd borrow one in a hurry if I wasn't close to home. It's a risk, but that's my choice.
Ive got a new to me SBMM Stingray. I have no worries that it's gonna let me down. I say sell your surplus bass.

While I have never had a bass let me down on a gig, never broken a string or had a flat battery during a set, I have had several basses fail at home and discovered 2 flat batteries on sound check. That's why I take 2 basses. I've had 3 amps fail on gigs, all tube, which is why I only use SS and D class these days. I've seen several strap malfunctions on basses and guitars, so a new instruments can be dropped or damaged and cease working. Borrowing a bass "in a hurry" is not an effective insurance policy, because. . . what if you can't borrow one?

Of course it's you choice to do what you like, but to me, it looks like playing Russian Roulette with your gigs.

Gift from wife? If she is like mine she remembers every gift. Plus she knows every bass I own! Can’t pass anything by her !! You better keep it!!

Haha...EXACTLY! It is a beauty: Warwick Corvette 5 with bubinga body and wenge neck...it looks awesome and has that classic Warwick growl, I just struggle going to the narrow string spacing after playing my 19mm spaced basses.

You don't love it, so sell it. Get something else as your backup.
I have a Fender J bass MIM. Sits in the corner, I hardly ever touch it. When I do, I dont like the feel any more.

My main bass is a Sterling by Musicman which I love, purchased nearly 2 years ago. Great for all I do.

The J bass had flats on and I hung on to it, to use with synth pedals or have tuned down. The string tension was always too tight.

But I prefer sound/performance of Sterling with synth pedals.
Tried replacing roundwounds on J bass. Better action but still dont love it much.

Obvious answer - sell it. Money is tight, surplus item, could do with funds..... BUT..... what if Sterling gets damaged.....?? Do I need a spare back up??

Anyone similar? Anyone sold their 2nd bass and regretted it when main bass was out of action??

Help me decide please!! Thanks
