I'm considering listing a bass for sale. I want nothing to do with Ebay and I don't entirely trust Reverb. I've heard good things about Talkbass. How do transactions generally work here? Do you get payed by PayPal or by some other means. I'm really not a fan of selling online, but I'll lose 20% if I consign it at a shop. I would just like to understand the process here.

Talkbass itself does not have an e-commerce platform of its own, so it's up the seller and buyer to figure out how they will transact business. Use Talkbass to market things you want to sell or to look for things to buy ... the actual sale is handled through PayPal, personal checks, cash, or whatever method the buyer and seller agree upon. Often the seller will state in his or her listing what means of payment he or she will accept.

you will lose 20% if you consign it, but unless you sell to someone local to you, you'll have to pay shipping or at least part of the shipping, which may come to 20% or more depending on the arrangements.

i have bought one item on talkbass, and it was a local sale. i went to the seller's apartment, tried the speaker, gave him cash and drove it home. it went fine. i sometimes sell on craigslist or make local sales on ebay, where i meet the buyer in person so no shipping although there are the ebay feeds, but ebay has a lot of eyes, so if i can't sell on CL i go there.

The usual scenario is:

1. become a supporting member of TB so you can use the classified.
2. place ad on TB. People love pictures so include them, usually I indicate a price that includes shipping in the CONUS. Other people give a price and say that shipping is extra (either a flat fee or based on actual cost). Most people use PayPal for payment.
3. answer PMs from interested members.
4. agree on a price, buyer sends money (usually PayPal so usually instant)
5. seller packs the item well, ships (often insured - could require signature as well).
6. FedEx/UPS/USPS don't screw up, buyer gets item. Leaves positive feedback
7. seller likewise leaves positive feedback

All are happy and go out for ice cream.
