Selling to guitar center or sam ash?

hey there, i was trying to sell an amp head locally and had little luck, before going to either sam ash or guitar center and wasting my time, does anyone know about how much they'd give me for it, if anyone has sold to them or knows what kind of percentage of the original price they take off?

I used to work at GC and when we looked at a used piece we used primarily two different sources to come up with a price. We looked at other exact or similar pieces currently within GC used inventory, and we looked at completed Ebay auctions. These two pieces in total gave us the information to go to the seller and offer usually 50% or half of what we saw in our inventory and on Ebay.

That means...you get offered 50% of what you could have made on it if you sold it on Ebay or Craigslist.

Don't do it!!!

Just like any other large retail outlet (auto dealership, etc.) GC wants their floor space and inventory occupied by new equipment. The more used stuff on the floor or walls means less space for new stuff, so they make trade-ins and other used equipment less attractive than other alternatives. Not a bad thing, just business.

As mentioned above, you're better off selling on TB or eBay.

Never. EVER. EVER EVER *EVER* sell a piece of gear to a store, least of all GC or Smash. They will not - and can not- give you value for it. Sell privately and get the value for axe. Selling to a store is worse than trading in a car (which is also a horrid rip)

DON'T DO IT!!!

50% is the most you will get.
They will start offering you around 25%.

good information.. the only way i could see selling to them is if you NEED the money, that day.

You know, I don't mind taking a bit of a "hit" to unload a thing right away & not deal with strangers & shipping. And I'm willing to pay a bit more for the ability to try something out first hand, make sure it speaks to me. These guys got mouths to feed and leases to pay - I get that.

But something must be very out of whack nowadays because the store scene is just ridiculous! I was in a smaller store the other day that used to be really cool but now it's pathetic. They have some neat older stuff but it's priced waaaaaaay to high. I would have loved to have done some trading - even brought a couple of old axes for that purpose. But their mind set was so rigid and their offers so paltry, it was pointless.

Things used to be better but the stores are just absolutely no fun anymore. :scowl:

:flame suit, activate!:

I almost sold something to gc today. I got a really good deal on an amp, and they were going to give me what I paid for it (about half of what they have it on their used site for). The only reason I didn't do it, was because the Peavey VTA400 head I wanted (also used at gc) was apparently sold before I got to the store.

If you got a great deal on something, and you can make your money back, I say why not, or if you're just plain desperate for $$$$ and your item isn't selling.
