Double Bass Sennheiser 906e review the search for the perfect dynamic

Here are some pics of the Beyer M 88 and the H-clamp.

I seem to have the best luck w/ a mic on my bass located between the bridge and the end of the FB. I get a sound that I like with the head of the mic anywhere from their mid-point up to the end of the FB, and even a little north of there. This is the latest orientation that sounds real good to me. I can’t really reach those spots very easily w/out the H-clamp or a gooseneck like my AMT.

I think people like Adrian Cho, Bob Branstetter, piro and perhaps others all gave me the idea to try a mic around this part of the instrument. Comparable perhaps to an AMT w/ a tailpiece mount.

I think this mic sounds more natural on my bass positioned like this than anywhere down around or under the bridge. I spent time today (again) trying different things poking the mic through the afterlengths of the strings in different spots and at different angles, much like Chris F., Uncletoad, piro's latest, and others. (The steroided-out windscreen on the Beyer makes it ridiculously easy to do that and have it stay put.) There are spots with a fair amount of output in that region below the bridge on my bass, but through this mic they all sounded either a little too boxy and ringy or a little too boomy and hollow to me. I like it as shown in the pics a lot better.
Yea man thats How I've got it too...although with the PR 40 a lot of those other positions sound just fine.

Uncle Toad (and others), have you tried an e906 yet?

I too am attracted by the form factor & ease of elastic mounting on the bridge, but have not sprung for it yet. At least there's one good report from Peck_Time.

Thanks....Lyle

Hi,

I'm an happy user of the combination : e906+H-Clamp+AI Contra III.

To be honest, and like Peck Time, I don't find anything guitarry with this mic.
I tried 3 positions :
. in front of the G-string F-Hole : mudddy sound, not well defined even at low-medium volume.
. behind the strings, above the bridge : quite equilibrated. my favorite position.
. behind the strings, just behind the bridge : quite equilibrated also, may be a little more med frequency (like the 200Hz body resonance).

With a piano-drums-bass trio, it works really good into the AI or directly in the PA.

I also use it with a "funky-gipsy band" with 2 guitars, piano, singer and drums --> blended with a planet pickup piezo, the e906 works perfectly.

What is really appreciable with this mic is the tolerance before feedback : feedback exist - of course, there's no miracle - but I have a lot of volume before troubles.

So, when I blend it, the majority of the signal come from the e906 and not from the piezo.
Depends of the stage of course, but it occurs many times.

Concerning the 3-position switch, the effect is not really evident : I imagine the 4kHz frequency is not very important for our basses...

Hope this helps...

Greetings from France
Jeff

Not to derail but I have been using the beta-52 with lots of success. I still use my amp and pickup for stage monitoring but if there is a pa I put the beta on a stand right in from of the bridge and refuse to send the sound tech a direct signal from the amp. So far I've been really happy. Very tight pattern and good low/mid response.
