I've got the B DT990 but not the 880s. Highs(lots of sibilance) and lows are definitely pronounced. With low quality recordings they emphasise the lowqualityness, and they require a very good source to sound at their best.

These are mutually exclusive, IME.

Headphones are not unlike preamps--to actually get "transparent" "flat" "uncolored" etc. actually requires significant engineering and tight tolerances on components, a price tag that reflects those requirements, and only really serves to reveal how poopie the signal you're feeding it in the first place actually is.

Find the colors that ring your bell and let it be what it's gonna be.

That's another good point. The HD600 also has replaceable cords - this will definitely extend the life of your headphones.

I don' know how many times I've gotten up and forgotten to take off my headphones or unplug them and cord got yanked off! It's a tight fit so half the time, the headphone just flies off my head :) But the other half, the plug comes off - could be much worse with the cord breaking or taking damage.

Then again, maybe not everyone is as klutzy and forgetful :laugh:

What I'm finding so far in my research on head-fi, manufacturers' sites and here on TB (especially in light of what @callofcthulhu wrote last), it's just like shopping for amps/cabs/basses/strings...the list can go on and on and outside of gear to other interests.

There's some inherent qualities to equipment whether in feel or sound or both but there's also subjectivity based on what we like and what we hear.

All the input is incredibly helpful here and I've learned much in a short time, now I just have to try something and see what works! And if it doesn't work, I'll try something else! :D

And I changed mine out to full-balanced XLR's ( on my HD600's ). But that would be overkill for most, and I can't say I heard a noticeable difference. But when your headphone amp has XLR outs, it's a nice option.

The HD 600 are very popular and I heard a while ago the the HD 650 was its replacement but the 600 are still selling and I think they went down in price. The are not the HD 800s but very good. Another I feel in the same line is the AKG 701. For the price they are very good. The also make a quincy jones model which is actually a little cheaper. Andrew Scheps who is a world renowned mixer has now totally mixes out of the box. Lap top, Appollo interface and the sony 7506. He stated he knows what they sound like. Adele, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Ziggy Marley, Beyonce to name a very few. So if you know your headphones and Know its positives and negatives you can do well.

I really like the idea of the HD600, it's just the impedance is keeping me from buying it. I guess it works it I only want to plug it into my amp but I'd want to use this with my iPad/iPod/Zoom and don't want to get an amp for it :(

If that's the case the second pair does not have to be in the expense of a HD 600.There is a headphone that is somewhat expensive, Less than the HD 800 and simply amazing that may even surpass those double the price and getting popular with pro master/mixers. Its Audeze LCD-X... Even used may solve your problem.
