Sennheiser HD600, Beyerdynamic DT880 Pro?

I really like the idea of the HD600, it's just the impedance is keeping me from buying it. I guess it works it I only want to plug it into my amp but I'd want to use this with my iPad/iPod/Zoom and don't want to get an amp for it

I have the HD600s and think they're fantastic. My experience is using them with a mixer or headphone amp and also a Fiio X5 music player that is designed for high impedence headphones.

But I find them pretty much unusable with a PC or laptop headphone output or a typical consumer level music player. Just too quiet.

If working with your laptop or consumer audio device is a priority, you want to look for something with 80 ohms impedance or less.

Unfortunately, the Beyerdynamic DT880 phones are 250 Ohms and won't perform much better with your music players.

As @monkeyfinger said, You need phones that are 80 ohms or less.


FYI, Either the Sennheiser HD300 Pro ($200) or the Beyerdynamic DT770 Pro ($150) are available in low impedence versions and will work great with your equipment.

I've used both of them and IMO, they sound great for mixing and also recreational listening. I prefer the Senns, but that's just my personal opinion.

You may also want to look at good pair of IEMs. Most of them are designed to work well with low power amps. Westone makes some good ones for about the same price range as the headphones discussed here.

I was starting to lean towards the DT770 and will definitely check out the HD300.

Another consideration is to just use my Audio Technicas for my consumer audio and consider the others again just for my Genzler amp, but then certainly the above you mentioned would probably work fine for all of my applications.

Actually I started looking into IEMs and narrowing down manufacturers. Going to check out Westones!

For a bass player, I would recommend something with at least two drivers, one for bass and one for mid-hi. Prices go up from there, but that is the minimum I would start with.

For anyone who is interested, I've committed to the IEM route. Since it is definitely in my future when live playing is safer, I'll put my money towards them. Still researching, and it's yet another world I've entered!
