Serge Gainsbourg - Melody Nelson

Hi everyone,

For those interested in Dave Richmond’s work on Serge Gainsbourg’s records, and more specifically on Melody Nelson, I have just created this channel :

My goal is to redo the entire album as accurate as possible with the same bass. More videos with tabs/score will follow.

I also intend to remake songs by Scott Walker, especially "The Old Man’s Back again".

Thanks to this this site i had the opportunity to exchange directly with Mr Richmond. I never thought I’d make him listen to his own work !

I’ve been working on this project for a while, and Jane Birkin’s death makes it a bit strange, to say the least

I know there's been plenty of discussion about this fabulous bass sound, first of all it was thought to be Brian Odgers, then Herbie Flowers on a Jazz then finally Dave Richmond supposedly on a Burns Bison (although he can't seem to remember much about it and he's only really been confirmed as the player on the Melody Nelson sessions).

The thing is if I just use my ears I could swear this is a Rickenbacker being played. I've tried to get this tone on a Burns and it doesn't sound the same even with a variety of palm muting, pics and pickup selections. But I'm very...

The whole album is now finished on my channel, as you may have noticed and i'm still working on a book about @Dave Richmond with a french arranger.
