I've had a soundman insist that my bass was boomy below low E. Thing is, on the monitor mix it was fine, it was just the FOH EQ, but he didn't know that until i showed it to him.
One additional obvious thing: is this an active bass? Weak batteries can give fluctuating output. I had that happen at a clinic once when I took my Lakland and got the comment that my bass was really low in the output department. Turns out the battery was running down (but not out).
