Double Bass Seth Kimmel #28 5/8ths 5 string

Ah, man... Gary... I'm 63 and barely remember my own phone number. Tune in fifths? Rabbath fingering? I'll be drooling in my porridge before I get all that down...

Seriously - this whole five-string adventure has been a fascinating learning experience into the physics and architecture of the instrument - and the issues of physical limitations and the nature of the instrument. Even if nothing comes of it (except maybe a Stenholm extension which seems easier to negotiate with my shoulder issues than a gated one) it's been an education.

Didn't mean to hijack the conversation, but... really... aren't we lucky to live in an era where there are such great bass makers (and thinkers about their craft) as Seth, Gary, Arnold and all.

no hi-jacking issue. i have been playing around on my electric 5 strings with the High C tune to a B and wondering why no one has done this (to my knowledge). You get a major third in a pivot and a minor third in a pivot as well , a chromatic run of 8 notes all in one pivot pos-tion and a scale across the fingerboard from the E string to B string of a octave and a sixth. (One of my goals with this new bass is to bee able to use guitar fingerings from the 5th note up (C on the G string)
so the pivot becomes less of a need. Anyway hard to explain but I think this will be my approach when I get the bass.

I forgot to say, I'm looking forward to seeing this bass also at the ISB!

Gary

I would love to have you take a play on it! Yes the scroll is cool we decided to keep push the three tuners to the far side and make the high 5th tunerin the lower position so the tuners would be little changed, and it would allow for the C extentsion in the future (which decision came the other day).
I must say i am quite excited about it!
