Double Bass Seth Kimmel #28 5/8ths 5 string

sound files coming - this is what I can tell you comparing to my 7/8 and 3/4, the deepness is less on the 5/8ths, in fact it is less on the 3/4 compared to 7/8. The definition of the notes and resonance is really there on the 5/8ths and the high string tuned to B make a three note chord very pleasing. Nice growl and consistency throughout the bass. Really easy to play, guitar fingerings almost everywhere, and it sings beautifully. Through an amp (which was always my main approach) is solid (I am using the rev Solo (1st time) and it seem perfect fine. I am used tot he KK bass master and I may try it when I have time.

Seth and I have been chatting about some of his basses in our room at the ISB (June 2nd-8th) I'm excited to see this!

Gary

Gary,

I look forward to meeting you and thanks so much for "hosting" the bass. I will be there Tuesday afternoon June 4th and leaving in the morning Thursday June 6th. Shall I bring a bass stand? I have the deets on the bass from Seth (wood, measurements etc.)

There's a lot of depth in that bass, an enjoyable sound indeed. Excellent work from Seth, and an interestingly small design. And an Eb neck! My own small bass, my first, took a lot of flak at the ISB San Francisco event for having an 'impossible to play in tune' Eb thumb stop. Nice to see I'm not the only one makes them like that, and the woman who bought mine was actually looking for an Eb neck so... Anyway, really nice that you've shared these Youtube videos and demonstrated the bass. You've got a fine adventure ahead as you explore the possibilities of your small 5-string.

thanks so much - I asked for the Eb neck! But I am really happy with the bass and look forward to serving it well!'

Are you serious? ****, bass players are backwards somedays. If your physical reference point isn't the same on a different bass, it's not the bass's fault, it's YOURS for being unable to hear that you're doing it wrong and adjusting accordingly.

Maybe it's just because it's late and I'm cranky, but what you just described is incredulous. Do you think violists or cellists complain when they pick up an odd-dimensioned instrument ( An old 18" Viola or a Montagnana cello)? They don't call it "unplayable", they adjust!

Idunno, maybe I just forgot to take my pills today.

Not at all. Among my home crowd I had only a single bassist, a long-time member of the Vancouver Symphony, complaining about the Eb thumb stop at the heel. He actually went so far as to suggest that I try to graft some wood or at least epoxy putty there to provide a "proper" thumb stop. As much as I respect that bassist as a musician, I politely listened without the least intention of following up. Dozens of others among my large client list tried the bass and I watched as bassists of varying experience quickly adapted after taking a moment to place their hands at the heel while playing.

But San Francisco was different, primarily owing to the leadership of Chuck Israels as the apparent lead playing judge for the ISB competition. Seems the others took his lead. Here's video of the stage presentation of my bass on the day after judging, make of this what you will:

None among my clients were as lost as this. Something to do with latitude?
