SGD Lutherie Pickups

I've been wanting to put up a little review since I got my pickups, but have been very busy.

I've had the narrow neck / wide bridge combo for a few months now and I absolutely love them. They are great pickups for a Schecter elite. I'm still figuring out everything they're capable of, but the more I play them, the more I love them.

I can see myself buying a pair of the sidewinders in the future. And the varitone sounds quite intriguing too. :hiding:

I had David put one of his dual coils in a wooden shell I made for a bass I made and I gotta say I have found my new favorite pups. I will be using them from now on. Very full sounding. I only have one in the bridge position( its fretless) and it is fat and full and much more bottom than the kent armstrong I was using. Great output and not muddy. Love it.

Here's an update of my SGD pickups soundclip (Sidewinders).

In the clip, you hear the SGD pickups in passive mode. There are 4 parts. The first 3 parts are neck alone, neck+bridge, bridge alone, respectively (for each combination I play scales in G, B and E). Then I play some harmonics, and some tapping. Recorded through a Boss ME-50B, no effect, flat EQ, into a Terratec 24/96 soundcard, no postprocessing.

Patiently waiting for any news on the ATK pickup. I loaned my ATK to a friend after his bass was stolen, and just got it back recently. I like the tone, but feel it could be better. I like the clips on the SGD site, so it seems like it'd be a good fit.

I'm presently working on an ATK replacement. It wont be too much longer now.

For a couple of five-string basses that are in my future, I'm thinking that a pair of Series 3 humbuckers - wide aperture - would be just what the doctor ordered for fretted bass, while a pair of Series 3 humbuckers - narrow aperture - would be ideal for fretless.

Does this make sense to you, David? What say ye? :hmm:

The narrow aperture pickups are a bit more mid focused, so the bridge pickups gets a nice fretless bark. Since the narrows are derived from the Jazzbuckers, that makes sense. They are fat sounding Jazz pickups.

The Sidewinder Plus pickups also sound a lot like a bright Jazz bass.

Don't rule out the wide-aperture humbuckers for fretless. They have a very good fundamental and lots of clean, usable midrange and really respond well to different fingering techniques.

What size of pickups were you thinking of ordering?

Yeah, I love the Rhapsody 12, but I always found EMG HZs to be pretty sterile. I like Barts a fair bit, but after hearing some soundclips of the Sidewinders and also reading on the site they had quick connects, I was sold. I'll report back as to the sound difference between the Sidewinder and the HZ (I'm only replacing the neck pup right now as that is what I use 90% of the time anyway) when I get it.

I believe they would be the Link Removed

My mind is certainly open re: wide vs. narrow aperture soapbars for the fretless. But it'll be wide aperture all the way for the fretted instrument... :cool:

Just want to say that I finally got my new bass 4 weeks ago with the ND3-35 soapbars with the wide aperture. I love 'em.....this bass sounds fantastic.....together with my Markbass LMII it sounds fabulous, I haven't been using any pedals, though I managed to buy an Xotic BB Bass anyway (yep-just can't get away from GAS) but using it mostly for boost and a bit of dirt. Those are really nice pups.....I don't really have a facillity to record on my PC so I can't put soundclips on here but I'm definitely using these pups on all my other basses from now on.....Thanks man, really happy I found these.....

Sorry about that but when it comes to describing sound I'm pretty useless. But I do know what I like. But I'll try.....

I have a FAST Bass (custom handmade by Canadian luthier), 4 string, chambered shortscale with flats (new Fender 9050's). I play mostly Blues and Rock so I like the P bass sound and use 50/50 fingerstyle and pick. I use a Markbass CMD121P combo or my LMII with Schroedder Mini 12L+ 4 ohm cab. Now, all I can say is that these pups are perfect for Blues/Rock/Motown.....warm, punchy, heck I'm useless trying to explain this....all I know is they fit perfectly with what I needed this bass to be.......

Sorry if that didn't help......I will try to put soundclips asap.......
