SGT-DI vs HX Stomp (as a preamp/dirt & comp)

I've own a HX Stomp, but I'm very interested in the SGT-DI.... I've yet to play one in person (or a newer Venture head). I really like knobs way more than screens/menus, but I'm not sure the SGT-DI will offer me anything I don't already have. Anyone have experience with both?

Looking for warmer/rounder Ampeg type tones, light overdrive/grit - nothing too extreme.

I understand the allure of a simpler pedal with just a solid sound. If you didn't know how to use the Stomp, I would recommend the SGT.

I don't think the SGT has anything the Stomp cannot offer an option for, but many people use their Stomps with other pedals because they prefer their sound/interface/whatever. Why not get the SGT and integrate it with the Stomp? I did that with my SansAmp+Stomp, but finally opted for smaller size of just the Stomp.

You already have both the B15 and SVT and their respective cabs on your stomp. My main complaint about the stomp has been that the stock cabs are too round and warm and I could never get those heads to clean up entirely unless almost setting the gain at 0.


I think it would be redundant and you'd be losing more on utility and variability but there's nothing wrong with wanting something simpler or a different interface..

No experience w/ the HX Stomp but love my SGT-DI. I set the SGT @ 9:00 and just above unity gain. That allows relatively clean tone when playing lightly and more "grit" when digging in. From my experience the SGT circuit is one of the few that doesn't weaken either the low or high end.

One lesson I learned is at 1st I was slamming the SGT w/ a hot signal from an Edison at high gain. But that resulted in very subdued high end. When I backed the Edison down to just above unity gain it seemed to "open up" the clarity of the SGT.

I've also discovered a heavy OD, almost synth-like, if I set the SGT to about 2:00, unity gain, turn on the ultra Hi and turn my bass tone knob to zero. Crazy smooth OD.

I'm in a similar position except for me it is the clean Fender Showman Amp tone that I love. There is a ton to love in the HX Stomp. It is my IR host, tuner, di,comp, chorus, sub octave and efx loop controller. I run my Future impact v4 in the efx loop. There is no other package that size I know lf that can do what it it can and for the money in the used market? The HX is a steal...

What it is not, is my basic sound. Nope. Before the Stomp, there is an Underground Accellerator. In your case, maybe a grand Slampegg would do it for you.
