Sharp edged pole pieces

I love the pick ups in my vintage Aria Jazz copy, but the pole pieces protrude from the covers and they are SHARP on the edges. I've got them adjusted where I like them and don't want to lower them.
Has anyone else had this problem? What did you do to resolve it? Can you file them without ill effect? Cover them, or shim up the covers so they're flush?

are these individually-adjustible pole pieces? or are they just "normal" pole pieces protruding through the cover? if they're the latter, then why don't you just put a couple (or three) coats of clear nail polish in the pole pieces?

Slap a little electrical tape over them and roll on.
