Double Bass Shen Owner's Club

Hi, like so many on this thread, long time electric player, aspiring upright player. After borrowing an upright for a year and a half, purchased my very own Shen SB88 and I love it!

Here is my Rogeri Willow which I use for orchestra only. A few pics next to my Roma hybrid which I use for jazz and pit orchestra work. The last pic is with my bass section collegues

Rod, who did your extension?
The ebony extension on the Shen was done at the Cincinnati Bass Cellar. I suppose either Andy Stetson or Chris Roberts did it but I did not ask them who specifically made/installed it. It works really well and does not rattle.

I did not have it a month and I tripped up some stairs with the bass. Fortunately, the only damage done was bending the closer bracket. They got me in right away and had it fixed in a few hours. I have a great time every time I go there.

Thanks. I have the Rogeri Willow and am debating what to do with it. I was dead set on selling it a few weeks ago because I thought it was too soft-sounding, but I swapped out the Belcantos I had on it for Flexocors and I'm auditioning a bow that seems to have added a bit of brightness to it. I had a new bridge put on it last year that also helped. Have you done any other mods to your bass, such as an endpin or tailpiece swap?

I've not done any further upgrades to the Rogeri Willow. The endpin in my Romanian hybrid is nearing end of useful life so I am considering upgrading the Shen endpin then installing the current Shen endpin over to the Romanian. I have no plans for the tailpiece.

I didn't care for the sound of Belcantos on my Shen. They produced a sound that was deep and powerful, but too dark in tone for my taste. I swapped them for Kaplans which kept the power on the bottom end, but added a bit more clarity to the tone. My teacher, who is a professional orchestra player, has nothing but praises for the sound of this instrument.

I have made recordings of orchestra performances I have been involved with where we played a piece with a 4 part harmony bass section soli and this instrument projects very well in a hall. hope you find the winning combination of bow/upgrades for yours.

I think I made some headway with the bow. I tried out an F.C. Pfretzschner from a local shop. That brightened the tone a little bit. Based on that trial, I had my bow rehaired from black to white and noticed an improvement in brightness, so I'm now debating which bow to keep. Right now, my current bow is winning out.

I also accidentally found out that using Kolstein all-weather rosin may be more to the bow and strings' liking as compared to my normal Kolstein soft

Someone else had mentioned installing an Ulsa endpin helped. The OEM one is rattling and so I may consider that option based on what my luthier suggests.

Hi folks. SB 150 here (I think). I have the hybrid. I have a few questions:
1. What's the benefit in TB of being in a club? Not meant to be a sarcastic question, just curious. Just a fun thing?
2. What's the difference between an SB 150 and a 180? Both hybrid?
3. I looked at a Shen Willow Flatback the other day. Don't know the number. Sounded great. Anybody own one? I'm wondering about the "fatback" being more trouble in terms of cracks. My hybrid seems indestructible.

Just a fun thing, but the prestige is immense!
