I was not aware of Shen ever using Mahogany instead of Maple for the back and sides, as mentioned in post #458. It is a newer option. The more dense willow is used for both back and sides in the 200 series basses and willow is used for sides along with a Maple ply back on the specialty sized 190 flat back Rogeri and 5/8 models in that series. It is a tried and true combination. I hope that this has been helpful. Enjoy playing your Shen basses!

I played a maple/mahogany Rogeri last summer that I really liked, but the Rogeri shoulders were too big for my taste. It responded easily and had the potential for orchestral work.

A little clarifying may be in order regarding mahogany. We have used it for the Rogeri outline and the Shen classic outline, with great success. Any mahogany Shen is now labeled "SB288". The problem, of course, is supply. We had an opportunity to get a couple hundred sets, but have had little success finding more. It's too bad, they sounded fantastic. The way Paul described them is they sound like what you want your maple bass to sound like in five years, right out of the box.

Hello, I also have an SB200 willow, but not a flatback. Had it for 7 years and my take is that the bass does well with humidity but hates to be dry. So I use dampettes in the winter. Make sure that the dampette is not to wet when you put it in the bass. You don't want the thing dripping on the inside bout.

hi friends – SB150 player here. Someone above earlier said something like "you won't outgrow an SB150 unless you start playing in a professional orchestra, and even then maybe not" – with that and costs in mind, does anyone have any thoughts on having an extension installed on this model?

It might be worth reaching out to @TylerL about how his bass handled those extension notes.

I had an extension installed on my SB200 just a few months ago. I have no regrets, and I have made others happy with it. If you plan on keeping your bass for at least a few more years, I would encourage you to do the same.

I have an SB200 with a KC extension on it. Adding the extension opened up the tone on both the bottom and top of the bass. I recommend it.

I have a Shen from back when Upton used to set them up and sell them as their economy model. Can I cross post?!
