Shield plate on Fender P pup too big

I'm replacing a stock p-pickup in a cheap Epiphone with a Fender Original P pickup.

PROBLEM: The bass shield plate (that goes in first) is too big for the hole by appx 1/8". The coils and covers would fit fine otherwise.

QUESTION: The signal flows thru this shield. Will it adversely affect sound quality if I trim 1/8" off of the brass shield plate or do I really have to route the hole out?

I'm feeling a little like I'm putting lipstick on a pig, but I like the neck enough to experiment with the p-ups.
