Hi, all, from sweaty SoCal.
This was all kind of surprising, but I found myself in possession of a beautiful new bass, so I figured I should learn how to play it.
To make things interesting, the bass is right-handed.
I'm pretty much not.
But hey, since neither hand knows how to play bass, it shouldn't really matter, yes?
I've got about 20 months' experience learning to play guitar at this point. Left-handed, of course.
Did I mention I thrive on doing things other than as recommended?
I have a total of 4 hours' playing time on this lovely Epiphone Thunderbird IV that came my way. I have a Rumble 25. I have a cable, and a stool.
I find the sounds it makes to be very soothing, when I can keep the holy-Jeebus-but-they-is-BIG strings from making "that noise" when I come off the frets.
I also have an insatiable appetite for good advice.
So I'm really glad to have found you all!

Yes the monster does growl. So you will have to learn how to mute the unused strings. How depends on how you sound the strings, will you use two or three fingers, a pick, with your thumb, or by slapping the strings? Each method has it's own muting method, so I'm not going into detail here.

I recommend the book, Bass Guitar for Dummies. It starts you where you need to start and then takes you one step at a time to where you will be playing with others.
