I have a Washburn AB35 5 string 4 sale and I'm wondering if it's OK to simply ship it unwrapped in the very heavy duty hardcase it's in. There are no less than 5 HD latches I thought I coud tape down w some Gorilla tape for added security. Didn't know just where to post this but there must B a lot of people on this forum who have shipped big heavy basses. Assume this one goes from E to W coast. (?) Thx Gus

I would go to your local store - if possible - and ask for a box. The big ones that ship with high end acoustics in hard cases like Gibsons or Taylors.
This will make it much easier to handle and allow the shipper to put it on a pallet or otherwise to keep it from falling/sliding and banging around.
It will also show any shipping damage that might occur and gives a chance for pictures to be taken if needed before the recipient opens the box.

Yes, and.... I've heard that releasing (some, if not all of) the string tension on the neck, is a good idea.(Detune all strings a minor third, for example.)

You're on the double-bass forum, it's a small world and some of the information you can find is invaluable and not readily available elsewhere. Spend a little time, maybe you'll take an interest in the bass fiddle, who knows? You'll at least see a clear difference from the BG side. FWIW everyone starts green, and I think everyone has to put up with some eye rolls at the beginning as almost a rite of passage. Dig up some of my first posts if you want to hear some silly questions, for real. Gotta learn somehow. Alls you did was post in the wrong section. It's worth the hazing to access a one-of-a-kind resource for this sliver of the music world. Never shipped a bass though, sorry I can't help ya there...
I shipped probably 50 bass guitars back when I used to play the funny-looking little things.
If your instrument can move within its’ case, it can be damaged. Immobilize it within the case using styrofoam blocks or possibly air bladders.
Styrofoam peanuts are not ideal because unless you REALLY jam enough of them inside the box with the case they just settle and don’t protect the contents.
Air bladders do not, making them superior and more environmentally responsible.

Thx much fer your suggestions. V helpful and I'll heed the good advice and ignore the rest. Now I'm going steelhead fishing up in NY and will see if this bass actually sells when I get back. And yes I've learned some new things in this "sliver of the music world" BTW I'm a 45 year bodyman and I came up in the trades w a bunch of often wisea** rowdies.
