I am shiiping a bass with a hardshell case. Im guessing it might weigh 25 pounds? Or is that too much? Also on ups.com I put in 25 pounds, with diminsions of 60x24x24 and it says cost for ground would be $185 to the location its going to. KC to NJ. Is this odd? Am I messing the size up? Most posts I have seen state about $30 for people shipping basses.
Who's doing the packing? They charge a lot to pack- more profit in it. The shape/size also affect the cost. $185 is a lot. Maybe check FedX or the post office. Here are a few links you may want to check out: Packing a bass Shipping a bass Shipping/packing
20 lbs might be closer, depends on the type of hardshell case, and how you pack it all overall. Wadded newspaper weighs two to three times as much as bubble wrap, and does less good for padding. Are you actually using a box with those dimensions, or are you still looking for a box? Because the biggest bass-with-case sized box I have used is closer to 50x22x10".
That sounds way off. I think Bongomania is right on the money with dimesions. Bubble wrap is the way to go as well. You could fit three basses in the box with those dimensions. They are also figuring oversized package charge for that dimension as well. Do an actual mesurement of your box and recheck UPS charges. Twenty pounds would be closer in weight depending on the bass and case.
I had an SX in a hard case shipped from NH to HI, second day air via FedEx. Cost me about $86. Weight was roughly 27 pounds. Also, check the 'Dead Jaguar' thread in the Basses forum for a reason not to go UPS. http://www.talkbass.com/forum/showthread.php?t=568888
