Shipping Basses To Kazakhstan?

You were lucky then. Frankly I'd just rather not take the gamble.

For that matter there are Americans who will screw you just the same, dealt with them too. But I for sure wouldn't touch this.

It was pretty calculated, though I suppose luck had something to do with it. And just so there are no misunderstandings, I'm not trying to be jingoistic with that remark, but having fluent English on the receiving end of coms is quite helpful in figuring int'l deals out!

Hi George,
He's interested in a Legend 6, and a Warmoth 5. He seems pretty straight ahead via PM. I'd like a better understanding of what the actual risks are, regarding fees, taxes, paypal refund....etc

Unless the guy is shopping for a good used bass.

That said, I wouldn't touch it with a ten foot pole unless I could have the cash, not paypal or some type of promissory note, in hand before putting the bass in the system.

I've shipped r/c race cars to a few countries in Europe, but I made sure the buyers understood I had to have the cash before the cars went to UPS and it was always an easy transaction.

That does make me a bit uneasy. If the guy's straightforward it's to his benefit, but it at least raises yellow flags with me that he's interested in a Warmoth (not a bad bass, but also not a bass with name cache) and a Spector (a bass that is easily found overseas compared to boutique and factory builders in North America). It's easy to understand how it would be difficult to procure Fenders and Foderas over there (and they both run with heavy rep, so they have worldwide demand), but it's a bit harder to understand going international to find basses that are more simply good players, or that might be available more commonly on Euro or Asian markets.

EDIT: PayPal up front is pretty secure, but make sure you have ALL your ducks in a row (shipping costs, PayPal's AmEx-esque 3% charge), and that the buyer understands shipping/customs for the sale so he doesn't get antsy after it's left your hands.

I wouldn't risk receiving a Paypal payment....guy says something went wrong and poof...no basses...no money. Find out what the shipping charges are with the shipping company (they should be in a position to tell you the total cost including any customs clearance once it gets to its' destination. I would also only accept U.S. dollar money order and ship the basses once it clears.

Well, here's another Kazak purchase request received today. Mine's a '73 Gibson, so whoever he is he sure has eclectic tastes! I wrote him back and told him I wasn't sure & to describe what was involved. Good to get all this feedback. Ummm... maybe I won't.

The guy in question told me he has looked at forty threads and sent 30 PMs out for basses. He says he is tryin to use his savings on talkbass. I'm not sure I'd that means he is trying to make money or what but if he is trying to really buy 30 basses, I wouldn't sell to him based on that. I'm not here to feed someones flipping schemes. I'd sell to guitar center or a pawn shop if that were the case. I want the stuff I sell to be used, not flipped.

He also was prompt to say that Borat was shot in a poor Romanian village, not Kazakhstan. Apparently, those guys are pissed about that movie.

i got the same offer today. but the buyer has a positive feedback on here, has been on the site for over a year, and i contacted the seller he dealt with in the past, but said the deal was fine.

ill admit its definitely odd, but who knows. ill wait and see, if he wants to paypal me money and i have it professionally insured and shipped, im assuming id be pretty safe from any fraud.

when he starts asking to pay me western union, then ill be worried lol.
