How much of a risk am I taking if I ship something to a person on craiglist? He's offering to pay via paypal. Is there anyway I can cover my butt if he claims he never got the item?

I did it once. Went well. I'm in VA and he was is PA. We spoke on the phone several times. He paid and I shipped. He received and was happy. Done deal.

Not if you get tracking. I'd get the signature required on top of the tracking. That is to my understanding but I have never had anybody file a paypal claim...
Why bother? The whole point of craigslist is simplicity. Buyer comes to you, or you meet in a parking lot somewhere, he gives you cash, you give him gear. Everyone leaves happy, and you never have to hear from or deal with each other again. No "not as described" or "damaged in shipping" bs to deal with. And, unless he brings you counterfeit money, no worries about getting scammed.
I had someone on Ebay return an item I sold them. I had already pulled the money from Paypal out to my bank account, and when the return was filed, Paypal tried to automatically pull the refund out without my knowledge. However, I did not have a "backup card" on file with them, so they couldn't and I ended up transferring the money from my account directly to cover the refund and elected not to put a backup card on file, which they try hard to force you into. The important part here is that they tried to pull out the money before I had received the item back in the mail.
I'm guessing that may be the scam...he says he mailed the item back to you and doesn't, meanwhile, he already gets his refund from PayPal.
Remember, that PayPal protects the buyers feverishly as they drive the business, and rule in their favor almost everytime.
Perhaps he has some method to show proof he sent it off without actually sending it, who knows but I think this is the probable scam.
Yeah but the feedback system is more of an honor system.. It is just as potentially dangerous as CL..
Nope. Better than nothing......and CL has nothing. Create a fake email address......hack a paypal account.....happens all the time. It's quite a bit harder to do on TB because of the feedback system.

Not just that, but you're also dealing with someone that's invested potentially thousands of posts here. That's a veeeeeeeery "long con" if that's what they're up to.
I never ship or ask people to ship to me on CL. For me, that goes against everything CL is about.

I have had things I found on Craigslist shipped to me, I also have flown across the country to pickup vehicles off Craigslist.
What with all the scam buyers on Ebay I think you would be nuts to ship to a CL non person.
With TB you can easily tell who is a real live bass player even if they have no feedback. Bass players tend to be straight up dealers. All my TB deals have gone swimmingly.

but I hear ya.. I would rather deal here than anywhere else as well.. I have only sold (shipped) two things on CL .. and both deals went well... but I prefer here as well or a local sale.
As long as you get delivery confirmation... What's the worry? Signature req'd and all.

Here's how I answer the question:
1) Only collect the sales price from the buyer.
2) Have the buyer pay for shipping directly to the shipper by calling in and arranging everything himself while you're there with the item to be shipped.
I also recommend that you have the shipper take a look at what you're shipping and verify it to the buyer over the phone. Then let the shipper do the final taping of the box.
If there is a shipping claim, it's between the buyer and the shipper.
Btw, if the buyer is paying by credit card through Paypal, a claim can also be file with the credit card company.

I actually make a Paypal payment when the seller was at the shipper and the shipper already had the item in his possession.
