Hey guys,

First post here, great forum. So, I got a buddy who I introduced to bass. He flew away with it... Truly inspiring. We live in the Midwest, in Columbus Ohio. Last year, we flew out to my hometown Los Angeles, because he wanted to check out the shops and ultimately the Carvin showroom in San Diego. I play Carvin and they had a bunch of locations when I was growing up. Now it's just one. Long story short, he bought a Carvin. Now it's 2016 and he's itchin to buy something new. There's a pretty limited selection of shops in Columbus, but I know there's got to be some awesome hidden legend mom and pops just waiting for us to discover.

Anyone know some killer shops in the Midwest? We're willing to drive a few hours. Anything from Cincinatti, Pittsburg, Kansas City... I don't know... Been here about 8 years and have yet to truly explore the landscape. If you know of a place we should check out please post!

Thanks!

Check out used.guitarcenter.com. Desperate for cash bass players from all over the country sell their basses for half their value. It's the best resource for basses available, in my opinion. If it's busted or you don't like it, you return it. If there's a gc local to you it's that much easier. Otherwise you ship it back. Sure, it's nice to play before you buy, but no shop in the world has the variety or potential awesome value of the gc used catalog.

Totally agree with what Gorn said. I've got some great deals from GC's used sight. I even had one bass that just wasn't working right. I had it for over two months. I brought it back to GC to see if the tech could fix it. He had it for a couple of days and then he calls and said he can't find replacement pots. Even though it was just over two months in my possession they gave me a full refund. The bass in question was a Jack Casady bass which is a pain to find pots for.

Agree that GC used is a clearinghouse for cheap instruments. The near mint 2004 SR400 in my avatar cost me less than $200 with shipping.

The trouble is that each location might only have a half dozen basses so chances that it is one your guy is interested in is small. Luckily in my metro area we have five of them. If you trek to a city with many locations and spend the day going to each you could get a really good bargain.
