I would recommend any Gretsch Electromatic model, and most are under $1000. I hope the OP does well with his purchase.

I have SBMM Short Scale and see no reason to change pickup.I'll jump in on this if I may. Joe Nerve, who I trust, posted a couple sound files of his Sterling SS4 compared to his U.S. MM (was it also a ss?), and I would say there is zero reason to replace the pickups. If there was a difference, it was vanishingly small. I've also played with 2 bassists who used a SBMM, and I would be hard pressed to say they sounded any different than any other MM. They sounded great! Use the money to try lots of different strings ;-)

It has to be light and short scale. I read that the gretsch is heavier than the hofner. I really don't know if it isOK. First I want to thank everyone for your suggestions.
Now the wife is wanting one to learn on. So, which one?
Gretsch jr or hofner ignition club??
Hard to beat the Sire U5 for light and short; previously recommended. It has to be light and short scale. ...
I like the looks of the Dean. Thank you!Hard to beat the Sire U5 for light and short; previously recommended.
But here I'm going to throw something new into the mix that I didn't mention before simply because I just got one over the weekend, put flats on it, and set it up, and honestly, haven't had so much fun for $300 in I don't know how long, and this is it - the Dean Evo XM bass:

... and it's definitely short and light, plays easy, looks great and sounds awesome.

... and right now, as you can see, it's getting play priority over my Fender, hee hee.![]()
I checked on the sire and Dean. All out of stock everywhere I lookedA lot of people have mentioned the Sire U5, and I am GASing for one big time. Unfortunately, it seems to be out of stock everywhere, and an earlier post in the thread made it seem like they've been out of stock for a long time. Does anyone have any idea of when these might start showing up again?

Thomann has 2 in stock but not sure what shipping and taxes are gonna be for you. It's about a $70 bump to get one to the US. They do have a shipping calculator on their site.A lot of people have mentioned the Sire U5, and I am GASing for one big time.
