Short Scale Bass?

So I have been thinking that I might want to get my hands on a short scale acoustic bass. Keep it in the corner, not take up a lot of space, grab it to play here and there without having to break out the electric and plug it in. I am hoping to have one that at least projects a reasonable amount of volume so I could play along with a cd figuring out tunes. The caveat, I think - is that I don't want the bass to have a huge body. Price should be reasonable to what I am buying, no more than $350-$400.

Any suggestions out there?

Well.... The bigger the body- the more volume it will have.
Which is more important?

true, I have considered this a lot. I suppose I would like it to look and feel balanced
