Should Have Fired The Drummer

The one rock band that could pull off sitting while being oddly engaging

Oh boy, now we're back on the "sitting is never acceptable" kick. Tell...oh heck, dozens of quality performers, we can start with CSN(Y). Tell those guys they sucked when they sat.
Maybe the drummer wanted to fire the other guitarist because sitting is never acceptable, but then got confused because drummers sit, so he fired himself for sitting too?:wacky::laugh:

I saw George Melly at a show in Glasgow many years ago. The guy had to sit down between songs and was visibly struggling to keep on his feet at times, wheezing like a bellows at the end of longer numbers. Despite that he had enormous stage presence and charisma and that was one of the best shows I ever attended. It helped that I was dragged along by friends and had no idea who he was beforehand.

Don't need to stand to engage an audience and put on a top notch show.
Agreed. See King Crimson.

No. It's just that we are trying to put on a rock show. If we were all sitting, sure. If the guitarist's health was better, sure. We were veey concerned he'd take a fall getting on or off the stage. He could barely set his gear up.

It is all about the show you want to put on. A sit down, folk-fest isn't what we are trying to do.

It brings up an interesting concept, which is what happens when someone in a rock band has to sit for whatever reason. As others have noted, it has been done. In my band, one person would be sitting (besides the drummer) and the rest of us (particularly me) are moving around like crazy so I think in order to make it work we would have to either set them off to the back/side quietly OR do the polar opposite and really embellish the seat like Axl Rose.

This is kind of a rant. We were a 5 piece band, 3 guitars, bass and drums. We used to practice at one of the guitarist's house. Air conditioned space, kind of cramped but it was available.

We brought a drummer on board a few months ago. He had some history with the band, played with them on and off over the years. He and another guitarist convince the band to let the practice space guitar guy go. He is in his 70's, had health issues, lacked stage presence (couldn't stand for a set) and really wasn't up to playing. The drummer offers up his place to practice, so we let the guitarist go.

We practice 1 time at the drummer's place, and he quits the band. Now we're looking for a drummer and practice space.

That’s interesting. Sounds like he beat you to it….you know the rule here on Talk Bass is you ALLWAYS fire the drummer.

While you do get some bonus points for firing a guitar player, not firing the drummer is going to cost you!…

Seriously, sorry for your troubles. It is really hard to keep a band together and I hope you can get something up and running soon. Best wishes.

If you saw Nirvana unplugged, people would be glad you would be there to correct them. Like, *** were those guys doing?

I have never seen a pic of either band sitting when they played electric instruments live. Old blues legends are a different story.
