Should I do bass covers on youtube?

If you like what you're doing, and having fun doing it, who cares what some commenters on youtube think?

i always forget (until i read posts like this) that not everyone on here is an old fart like me.

do it, if you are sure that you are dead on (if that is your goal). I have used the cover vids to help me with a particularly tough part of a song i wanted to learn before. but sometimes, the covers aren't what the original is playing. I can get close without the vid.

if you want to be a serious bass player, don't post covers on youtube they will come back to haunt you. I am a huge proponent of keeping ones internet presence as minimal and un-personal as possible. that way when you actually want to promote yourself in the future with some serious work of your own, you have a clean slate to work from and you can create any image of yourself that you desire. as a musician/artist (or any sort of professional really) this is a vary useful tool to have at your disposal when it comes to promotion etc. for my money, play with/for your friends in real life, and don't use the internet as your personal diary. by all means record yourself playing things (I have a tape running every time i am noodling around if possible), but it is in your best interest to be vary selective with what you release to the world. I know this might sound like something that a 60+ year old would say, you know, back in my day we had no internet, and we had to walk both ways up hill in the snow carrying a full SVT rig in order to be heard by other people etc. I actually grew up with the internet, and sometimes I wish my name was not on those myspace band profiles circa 2004 that I no longer have access to, yet still come up when people google me.

Isn't the ability to delete your own videos just the greatest?

This is just my oppinion; If you miss an opportunity due to some clips that are roughly a decade old, You probably shouldn't be working with them anyway.

You're right.I'm sensitive when it comes to my playing,since I want to become a serious bass player.But the only way I'll get better is if I just take the criticism.

Constructive criticism is fine and we all need that no matter how proficent we become. But you have to realize that there will always be those people that criticise to intentionally cause hurt and to make themselves feel superior by belittling others. We all encounter this throughout life, but when you put yourself out there for recognition you become a target and will often receive more and harsher abuse than someone who doesn't. This just the "nature of the business"

We talk about "growing a thick skin" and you have to if you are going to stay in this business and if you do you will learn how. It just takes time. The trick is to not become so jaded in the process that you lose the ability to recognize and appricate the the "good" critcisim that will help to become a better musician. It isn't easy, but it's worth it.

To improve Id suggest learning songs by ear and keeping any video of you playing to your self for practice and evaluating your technique. The only videos of me on youtube are from live shows with bands...

I suspect that you may be generalizing a bit here... also, none of this reads as a reason for someone else not to post bass covers.

Don't worry,I'm a minority.I hate those kids that believe they're god just because they learned a song w/tab.I'm self taught,but I know my theory (not perfect,but I'm getting there!).I learn 99% of my stuff by ear,and honestly,I hate TABS,I will only use them if I can't hear a part (last resort).I slow down the song in Windows Media Player and if I still can't hear it,I just use tabs for that specific part.

I would play live,but the people I jam with are like in their 20's and I can't go to clubs with them.All the kids in my area play is death metal,and I don't like it.The bass is so easy for that genre,I can probably improvise an entire album and I'll get it correct.

The only way I can have fun is probably through youtube.

I will be dead on,because what's the point of playing a song incorrectly on the internet? You're just asking to be made fun of lol if you do :/.

I actually started to do it because a band asked me to post some videos of my work before auditioning me. Then I bought a camcorder and now I upload a couple of videos a month, just do it...

Most of those videos have apologetic players. I hate that. Don't mature in public. Maybe tape yourself and evaluate in private instead.

Even though I said earlier to post your videos, this is good advice, too. I think younger people have grown up with the technology where they can document and share everything about their life. Most of the time, it's not worth sharing.

I would not recommend to an average or below average bass player to put vids up on youtube. If you feel you are above average then go for it. If you are mistaken about your abilities be prepared for a world of grief man!

Is Rush,Yes,Led Zeppelin,The Who,Black Sabbath,etc below average .I LOVE classic rock/metal/prog,it's what I mostly play.I should try to play a few songs by Jaco (I never got into him).

Yeah I was thinking about doing that! I plan on making it private,showing a few people,and then putting out to the public!

I still say do it, I've seen some amazing musicians on YouTube and there's always someone who has a problem with it. Does it mean the musician isn't very good? No!! It just means the person who left the nasty comment is a nasty person. Also I think it would be a great practice tool, if you put a video up try to make the next one better and in 6-12 months you'd be able to see how much you've improved. People could see your progress and follow your bass journey.
